As for the cents, as I understand, they will require a different approach...

Common for a 79' I say just leave em as they are.

I think I agree. And when you say "Gem", do you mean any MS grade?

I don't believe the halo is mint set toning but rather something else.

You might try diluted dishwashing soap. Don't leave it in the soap or it will be ruined. Just wash it well and rinse it well. A second soak in alcohol is sometimes effective.

It's the white spots that are so difficult to get off. The dark ones are usually removable.

They are what they are. I am not really convinced that they need to be "saved". I was just entertaining the notion. It is visually exciting for me to see how the coins react to different methods of preservation and/or decontamination.

Oh yea. And no one told me that there is no such thing as a '79 S mint set. There was only a proof set made for San Francisco. Ball dropped.

Yes, you see I clearly stated in the beginning of this thread that I was trying to fill my sets with a San Francisco as advertised here on eBay. Unfortunately my location has no convenient coin shops to rely on for the hobby so I am forced to deal with with misleading advertisements and blurry pictures to entertain this hobby. It does leave a bad taste and forces me to be dramatic when it comes to "condition" and photographic representation. I am nearly at my wits end with purchasing coins online. The hobby is becoming too difficult from my perspective. Screenshot_20211205-195611.jpg

There are two three piece '79 SBA souvenir sets. One has the near date and one the far date (same packaging).

I don't recommend these sets. Mintages weren't real high and attrition is staggering but the sets suck. The P near date is seen fairly nice rarely and a very very few will have a nice Gem S mint. Other than these which in aggregate is fewer than 1% every coin is very poor quality. The sets have acquired a small premium in the last couple years.

They used to be destroyed almost on sight. There's also a 1980 version that is better on average but no Gems. This one isn't seen much. There's a fairly scarce 1981 version as well.

Where were these souvenir sets originally made available for purchase? Were they mint sets?
    Edit... Mint gift shops?

Against your recommendation I might like to compliment my similar, sucky, year mint sets with these.

    What do you mean, destroyed?

It was said, die deterioration, in another thread. I can't find it.

I don't know but it was probably the gift shops.

The regular mint sets for '79 are far better than the typical quality of coins made for circulation. The '79-D cent is tough in the set and both nickels come bad but the cent is tough to find nice in rolls too and the nickels are even worse.

Coins in mint sets are well made from new dies so all you need to do is find them without scratches. Circulation coins tend to be poorly made from bad dies and most are scratched also.

The SBA sets walked into coin shops but they never walked out. They were ugly and unloved so dealers just cut them up for the register.

Thats a filled MM. The post on the D broke. To actually be an OMM the S would need to be seen protruding from the D not on top of the D. You have a damaged MM.
