I had only vaguely heard of her from a collector friend of mine who has apparently communicated with her in some manner and all he said of her was "If you ask a question be sure you are ready for a SHARP response".

Not surprising. Time is money and best not wasted on the small fry. In my life experience, there have been very FEW VIP's (Politics, film, coins, etc.) who gave me (an unimportant, uninvited nobody who could give nothing to them) their undivided attention. Name Drop: James Garner and Graham Hill were the most memorable. Then, as soon as our look into the eyes short conversation was done -I no longer existed.
Check out how long and in what way many posters here react to questions. I'm pretty "sharp" on all of you here because we are not in a seminar when I treat students very differently. Anyway, knowing what he asked her would be very useful before forming an opinion.

Actually, I find the acceptance of us small fry to be the second best feature of this forum, the first being the information provided. I know I've been surprised at the friendliness here, similar to what I've experienced among chess superstars.

    'small fry'

What a sad way to look upon people. I would want nothing to do with a person who views people through such a lens.

Ummm, did you notice I was referring to myself in that description? Among the people who post here, I definitely identify with those who don't have the vast knowledge or financial resources others do. Of course, you have the right to admonish me if you wish.. I am just aware of the place myself and others occupy on this forum.

And I suppose you would also never do business with financial advisors who only deal with those who have a substantial portfolio.

Except you were not the person that used the term first, and you were quoting another member. Not to mention with any malice intended, but 'us' does not refer to 'myself' except (that word again) in certain medical cases.

The point: I did not interpret the member you are ummming as singling you out. I interpreted his comment as a general statement concerning people that consider other as a mere "small fry", and not worthy of attention by the privileged. I agree....that is a sad way to look upon people, or to be more exact, not look upon people.

Cyber conversations can convey an innocent statement into an assumed personal attack, when it is not meant to be, imho.

We are not talking about CT are we. We are talking about a possible new forum run by a big fish & company. Her forum should surpass the "traffic" volume of a long running TPGS forum within a day or two! BTW John, CT was the first forum I ever joined and just as you I find the members are usually very friendly and knowledgeable.

I was not referring to you.

On that note also there are people here with a vast amount of knowledge about currency throughout the ages. I guess it is all in how one defines the fry and the value of said fry.

I love the real deep dive knowledge you get from the people here about the subjects they obviously have a great passion for above and beyond the value and grade. When I come here and read an article about a coin and the history that it represents, that is the real added value for me.

From what I know about said big fish, I think I would find more of what I want at a place like CT. To each his or her own of course.

No, I have actually seen such behavior both nationally and locally. Been the beneficiary of such camaraderie. Personal experience beats movie fiction.

Yes, to my way of thinking, I considered small fry to be those of us who find it difficult to spend more than $50 on a coin. Cheap? Probably. Being retired I hope I'm using my resources wisely. I figure I have another 10+ years of life in me, if I'm any judge of horseflesh!

To answer the question of what segment isn't necessarily represented in forums, the high end. The high end of the market could certainly benefit from somewhere without all the chirping which is what I would assume it would be. If it's just the same as every other forum its a wasted effort

I have no idea what is planned but I could see the benefit of a more exclusive forum for the high end collectors just as I could see the benefit in any profession for one. Engineers don't really want to hear from amateurs nor do high end collectors really want to hear 5/5+ figure cac coins get trashed because someone saw a picture somewhere else.

I understand your point and it's a valid one. But I used to make my living, and a good one, telling engineers where they made their mistakes and how to fix them - and I'm not an engineer, never even took a single class in engineering. Never formally attended college at all for that matter. Which would by definition make me an amateur.

My point is rather simple, there are times when even the most advanced in any field should listen to the voice of an amateur - for they might just learn something.

They potentiality could, and there's places where they could do that if they want to. At least for numismatics the problem for the high end or whales (which I assume is what such a chat would be for) is that you run into jealousy and people that will bash things just because of who posted it etc.

If they do make the chat hopefully its open in the sense that anyone can read it, but if it isnt I'd understand why

I would think that whales wouldn't be sharing much information of too much value with other whales. Generally, I would think they don't want other folks competing for the pieces they are interested in. The only person really to gain would be the person with the initials LS.

Actually, there are several CT regulars that appear to routinely exist in the 4 and 5 figure coin value arena.

Maybe we don't have many 6+ figure value players here, though.

I have coins with values in the 4 to 5 figures. The value of the coin isn't the point though for me.

This coin is probably the most rare coin I own, not the most expensive to be honest. Might be worth 3 or 4 thousand if I'm lucky. Only about 800 of them were minted for Prince Joseph Maria Benedikt Fürstenberg von Fürstenberg, with silver from the Friedrich Christian Mine, by the Swiss medailleur J. H. Boltschauser.

It is a great coin with a great history IMO. An artifact from a very specific time and place. Like all coins really.

Now that is a coin well worth owning! The details are outstanding. Have we ever made coins with such detail?
