Is this a carbon spot?

I was wondering if this appears to be a "carbon spot". I'm doing an experiment in the lab tonight, or tommorrow, most likely tommorrow :) to see about removing these spots without damaging the coin. Just for fun, the coin in the picture is relatively worthless.

Nope it's not a carbon spot. That's from something, probably a liquid, being dropped on the coin.

Here's probably the worlds most famous coin with carbon spots - CLICK HERE See those little black dots - those are carbon spots.

Excellent, I will track down a penny with some carbon spots, and post the results of my experiment, assuming I get anything interesting.

Sound like an idiot I know, but why is that coin so expensive? What is so significant about it?

Because it was the only one ever graded that high. Of course it didn't stay "graded that high". That coin is a story all unto itself - one that caused a great deal of controversey in the numismatic world.
