Well, I did say he was a novice at testing. I don't even know what kind of kit he is using really. You could be very right about it being more modern. So far, I have not heard back from him about this. He works 12 hour shifts and is a pretty busy fellow. But I do appreciate all the replys thus far and have sent him a link to this thread so he can follow it. Hopefully he will join us at some point.
Over 2,000 years ago. Even that long ago they had accurate methods for testing the purity of gold. In about 30 seconds they could tell if gold was 24K, 18K, whatever. And those very same methods, touchstones and karat needles, are still used by many even today.
2,000 years ago maybe needs clarification. Gold was first mined in Asia Minor in 2000 BCE. Electrum was used by Egyptians from 5000 BCE. The Egyptians knew it was a mixture of gold and silver to different percentages. The first pure gold coins were by Croesus (Lydia) via refinery method in 561 BCE. The first purity of gold test was by the Egyptians CA. 1500 BCE. Gold has always been recognized as mixed with other alloys since 5000 BCE...possibly earlier but no definitive record of an earlier date has been discovered by Archeologists....yet. I know some stuff (I think). (Insert any emoji you want, here)
