    It wasn't made at the mint that's for sure lol,some kind of counterfeit novelty coin and the main date is 1961 the 1964 is extra.

    Looks like the 1961 was struck over the 1964. That's impossible to happen at the US Mint. They would have to take the Cent back into time 3 years in order for that to occur. And everything else would show some sort of doubling also. It's an altered date.

    @JCro57 Check this one out.

    Nah, Paddy, the 1964 is over the 1961.

    Also, fake, if the dates were doubled as you see them, then the other details, ie: Lincoln, Liberty & EPU would also be doubled, or at least some of them

    Welcome to CT @Rodolfo Pimentel. That is an interesting coin, but as already mentioned, not a mint error, and possibly as you mentioned, a novelty coin for some odd reason. Not sure how they accomplished it without affecting the rest of the coin. Maybe one of our member experts will chime in.

    I am a collector of old US coins and errors are not at all in my wheelhouse. I agree completely with you guys that this has to be an altered date or some Chinese knock off...... But let me ask this. What if a mint employee dropped a 61 cent in the hopper during his shift in 1964? Any outside chance at all that it would land in the die in such a way that it may present two distinct dates? Or will the second strike simply obliterate the details from the original strike?

    'False Dies' aka: counterfeit overstrike.

    Randy - if your scenario took place (it HAS happened), the
    coin would not look like this 'overstrike'. It would have a
    completely different look and striking characteristics.

    The damage to the right of the date area, by the rim at 3:00
    is where the fake die 'overstruck' the piece.

    Whoever did it did a pretty good job that would fool casual collectors who know nothing about the minting process

    Neat novelty piece. Even looks like they got the font correct.

    There is some doubling of lincoln...i can see his head outlined with a loop you can see some of it south of his bow tie

    So what would be a difference of it being done at the mint with the same die doing it at your home in the garage?

    Can we see the damaged part of the rim you got cut off in all your pics? It's the part just to right of the date. Let's see the complete rim, there, both sides of the coin.

    Several tons of pressure in the mint press, and a complete die that would have affected the rest of the coin.
