I got this in my change today. It looks like a 1982 D LMC (Small Date) that has damage on the number 2.

The "8" falls in line with a small date...top of the 8 smaller than the bottom of the 8.

    What do you guys think?

It is a large date which has been severely whacked on the 2. It is too close to the edge to be a small date.

Small date coins are not errors, they are part of the design. There are multiple varieties. Yes, its a small date as stated above.

Just saying because you posted in the error forum.

    It's a small/large date/medium date. Don't make me flex. LOL.

It is a large date cent, the date is to close to the edge for a small date.
    Top of '8' is oval.

Large date, the 1970 is so much easier to identify.

It's a large date for sure, the 2 is damaged but the distance from the rim is undeniable. If it was a small date it would be the uber rare one.

It looked like a small date to me,for some reason I was thinking of as if this was a 1970 which is based on the 9.

It's better to take your time to be sure and post a correct answer even if its not first, than it is to rush and post the first incorrect answer.

Wasn't in a rush, since the 2 was damaged the only other way to tell was by the 9 i thought, didn't even notice the large or small date had a position difference.

The other thing you might want to understand is that only 2 Copper LMC 1982 D Small dates have ever been discovered. I don't think a 3rd example will ever be found. So, in stating it is a small date you are declaring it the 3rd example. That's an incorrect statement that is made when you.. rush.

I always check the 2 first, then the 8, then the spacing from the 2 to the rim. I don't think you can easily see any significant differences on the 9 and I have never used it as a diagnostic
