Although I love my architectural coins, this is way out of my league.....check this out. https://www.vcoins.com/en/stores/ro...etter&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=want_list
I love the sellers descriptions: "Unpublished Portrait Type" - hm, yes perhaps - and...? "Extremely Rare Size: 23mm" - hm, yes kind of large - and..? "Choice EF and struck from dies of incredible artistry for the type! " - Not really choice EF and the artistry is very credible and often seen on Claudius' coins. "This enigmatic coin bares a draped and cuirassed portrait, which has only been recorded on a single example on RIC Online (see temp #1290)." - I don't see anything enigmatic about this comon coin. Its nice, but common. It doesn't even show the rarer legend with "GOTHICO". "That example, having been minted at another mint (probably Siscia, as suggested by RIC online) has vastly different style and also does not include a single pellet on the obverse. The mastery of the portraiture leads me to believe that this was most likely minted at Rome, but it could be another mint as these legends were used at all of the mints simultaneously." - Ah yes, the single pellet certainly makes it worth 3750 dollars.
After a 0.002 seconds of thinking, I decided that even if the pellet, the draped and cuirassed bust and the dies of incredible artistry were tempting, I think I will save the sum and buy 50 nicer coins with it.
Clearly intended for a newb getting into the hobby who thinks ancient coins must all be rare and valuable - after all they are ancient.
Only Cyzicus has the pellets underneath the bust as officina marks in 270, the coin is Temp 1318 https://ric.mom.fr/en/coin/1318
I can't say anything since I am a Vcoins dealer and bound (tightly) by the code of ethics 14. I will operate in a fair and honorable manner, and will not intentionally defame the character of my competitors or the quality of their products.
This is why I always grimace when people quote Vcoins prices as reasonable comparisons for what a coin is actually worth. Though not as bad as some of the shenanigans that go on at eBay...this one is pretty close.
Yeah, I was thinking the exact same thing, looks like a $35 coin. That is only accounting for current inflation of the market. I have no idea, since they do not interest me much, but I bet I have at least 20 in as nice of shape from various coin lots I have purchased.
My Ma used to say, "if you can't say something nice, say nothing at all". Saying nothing is a mouthful!
You should tell people if they do mistakes or simply if they can do better; it's a way to improve. The way you say it makes the difference. Silence is not always the right way.
It's the same at VCoins with antiquities. A long time ago I used to check VCoins frequently for antiquities, always sorting the search results by "newest", and there was a seller who would always be on top with tons of new items for sale. He must have had a running contract with cargo ships. The item descriptions can be pretty funny, too...not hard to tell when a seller is clueless but trying to make his item sound impressive. The style would be completely wrong, or obviously fake, etc. That's why I never understand the push to buy on VCoins...I don't see it as much different than ebay.
It's a Bell Curve...throw out the highest and lowest prices and just look at the middle...but always rememebr condition, condition, condition.
Always funny to see selling schemes that involve slapping a price tag on there for 5x the actual value, then advertising that the item is 50% Off!!! Not really funny though, it must work on enough people to perpetuate the trend
Good call out! I have purchased plenty of nice coins on Vcoins that are much better examples and happily paid more for them. There are many excellent sellers on Vcoins, present company included!
