I suspect that Joe was banning a particular individual who really overstepped the mark with regards to very direct rudeness and there was a side effect from that banning. If you saw the posts then you would see that they would have seen you banned from here too and most other Moderated forums.
I still get "user is blocked" which I would not care so much about, except I spent a bit of time uploading about 200 photos to FORVM's gallery; which they still have. If I am blocked, my coins should go with me
Here's a question a few of us have pondered offline. Why has everyone stopped posting on Forum? All of my online posting has slowed down quite a bit, not just on coin boards. But I see many of the old timers from Forum over here posting some excellent articles and research, only for it to be on page 20 the next day and forgotten. Curious to know why you aren't posting those articles on Forum or even to the numiswiki and getting money for it? Joe has always been very generous with his Forum bucks. My take is that Cointalk is a place to show off coins, instant gratification, while Forum has become more academic. Am I off the mark here? Sorry Mat for hijacking your thread.
I have been a member here as long as I have been at FORVM. My biggest issue with FAC is that it is a commercial site. There is also heavy moderation. Issues like this recent mass banning and no explanation are issues also. This place can also be as academic as any site.
In my haste, I read this as "It did get you flogged." I couldn't imagine what they said to deserve a flogging, but I sure was curious. LOL
Nobody was banned. Well one person was and I made an error entering the IP that was banned and EVERYONE was banned for a SHORT TIME. If you are still having a problem please call, email or text me.
Well, perhaps page 2 the next day rather than page 20, but that doesn't necessarily mean "forgotten"; just the end of active commenting. I do search for old threads on relevant subjects here all the time. Is it really so much better to be on a message board where people's posts from three weeks ago are still on the front page of each of the primary sub-forums because the posting is so infrequent, as it has been for some years now? I agree in general with your conclusion about FORVM's focus being more academic, but if your intent is to throw shade on showing off coins and instant gratification, what's wrong with that? I love showing off new coins here and seeing other members' new coins. How many people are truly "above" all that? And the accompanying write-ups (and comments) here are often as academic as the posts at FORVM. The difference is that nobody posts at FORVM just to show off a new coin unless it's an unpublished variety, or there's a question about the mint or the dating or the coin's authenticity. I've belonged to FORVM for years -- I don't seem to be banned, by the way! -- and find Numiswiki and many articles and posts there to be absolutely essential resources. But I've never posted, not even once, because I find the place way too intimidating given the "serious" focus and the heavy moderation -- for example, not being permitted to mention specific dealers, in either a positive or negative way. I guess I'm just insufficiently intellectual and academic for the place!
Not discussing other dealers on FORVM at all is not quite true. You can discuss dealers on the Notorious Fake Seller List. They deserve to be discussed and insulted. You cannot name a dealer that is not on the NFSL and question their coins or disparage them. That would be RUDE. Professionals do not publicly insult their peers or provide a platform for that purpose. You can discuss dealers that actively participate on FORVM and have been recognized for their support of other members (Procurator Monetae). They deserve to be discussed and praised. Those that contribute should be recognized and rewarded. Any other dealer that wants to advertise on FORVM should just participate and be helpful enough to get nominated and selected. The ONLY other moderation on the board is removing spam, trolling, and false information.
Nobody should be too intimidated to post on FORVM. People ask very basic questions everyday. Also, I have read some of your posts here. NO WAY should you feel intimidated.
@DonnaML Nothing wrong with showing off the coins. I do it myself and it's the reason I have a gallery at Forum. I'd just love to see some of the great write ups here on the numiswiki pages where they are easily found.
I used the FORVM messaging. I just tried again and got this maybe I used the wrong password, so I tried to do a password reset and got this
Victor, I don't know how you sent these "messages" but I have nothing from you. Also, I just tested your account and it is working.
