Some very nice coins here - but prices in 2021 currently ensure I won't get my second aureus. This one is out of CNG 222 in 2009, and rates as a 'budget' example. At the time they were selling roman gold from hoard finds in India - almost all test cut and heavily worn. Almost all were pre-reform Nero - obviously the foreign traders insisted on it. For $370+15% I can't complain I guess. Ex CNG 222
Although I can't contribute with any aureus, I allow myself to comment on a terrific coin, of good style and with a significant reverse Green with envy Q
Very interesting and beautiful coin . Too bad I couldn't afford an authentic aureus... The only one I have is a fake .
Well done on making a dream come true! It's a very nice aureus too. I don't have any aurei of Augustus - I'd like one, but so far just silver and a bronze or two. Well, I have this - Spain has issued some non circulating legal tender coins reproducing ancient (and mediaeval) coins and this one reproduces BMC 317, minted in Caesar Augusta (modern-day Zaragoza). The original isn't in RIC but combines the reverses of RIC 26 & RIC 29. I have a few ancient aurei, all battered to one degree or another. This is also from CNG, like mikebell's above - an Indian imitative which I attribute as "cf RIC 25, 31, 36, 40". It was less than $300 in 2010, even including buyer's premium. This was my first aureus - from Kunker in 2009. The type isn't in RIC - it should be under RIC 71, but that's only a denarius. It's in Calicó and Cohen and has a note in BMC. Calicó 444, BMC 98 note. Nero and Temple of Janus - RIC 50. Nero and Poppaea - RIC 44. And the only non-Nero aureus I have is this holed and repaired Probus - RIC 138. OK - resolution - you got a dream coin in 2021 - for 2022, I'll get a nice Roman Republican aureus. ATB, Aidan.
I agree 100 percent... Today its impossible to save any $$$$/ with the internet=sixbid= hundreds of auctions with so many tantalizing coins on offer/ now at really high prices. I used to anticipate getting a NFA / Tkalec AG catalogues in the mail/ twice a year and bidding on some really nice quality gold coins. So back in 1990s I could put aside $5K for better coins. That was a lot back then. John
@akeady you got some very nice aurei ! The Nero aureii are wonderful. I like your resolution for 2022
I also don't mind the cut and think it adds to the character of the coin which is a historically important and attractive type. Congratulations!
Congrats on a fantastic addition! An Augustus aureus is something special to have! I concur with others that the cut does not detract from the coin's overall aesthetic. Without giving away too much, I was also after an Augustus aureus this year. I had eyed it last year when it fetched a reasonable hammer price but I was after other coins in the same auction. Ultimately, when it was auctioned off this year, I was blown out of the water!
I plan to get an aureus someday, just so that I'll a comprehensive collection of denominations for people to see. I'll try to find one on the lower end of the price spectrum though, so I'm guessing that it won't be an Augustus!
That is a very nice aureus, @cmezner! my sincere congratulations. A historical and very appealing coin. You chose well. I remember how excited I was back in 2007 when I got my first aureus, actually bought two from the same auction. The pictures are unfortunately not very good.
Wow!!! Absolutely fantastic specimen. I'm quite of a Neronian myself and I admire the type greatly. Tricky to get the reverse well centered on such a small flan but yours does not disappoint. Bust is about as good as they get, style-wise
Lovely addition @cmezner but cruel that the 'barbarian' chief had to give his child as "security" (hostage) to ensure peace in the civilised world. Makes you wonder who the true barbarian really was??!! Sold my Antoninus Pius recently but am not unhappy coz I acquired an Assander stater instead. Just have these left and am told they are quite scarce (2-3 known). Augustus left; Gaius Caesar Galloping right: Hadrian on horseback (Fine Style). Someone here mentioned the reverse could be a mule (no not the animal he's riding) but one of the auction houses disagreed. Perhaps somebody could shed some further light:
Gorgeous aureii with lively portraits @Eduard Those are absolutely extraordinary aureii @1934 Wreath Crown. Thank you so much for sharing
