@physics-fan3.14 - do please give us an update, so we'll have some idea of the timetable, here? When do you plan to end this? That's entirely up to you, of course, but just give us word on whether you'll be wrapping it up soon, or letting it run a while longer, is all?

Oh, I'm so sorry y'all. I completely forgot about this - had a whole bunch of life issues come up and I haven't really posted here in a few weeks.

    I'll pick winners tomorrow.

If you have perused many coins of a certain date and finally decided which one you want to buy, don’t assume that the price will be in line with the price guides. By the process of elimination, you’ve virtually guaranteed yourself that he price will be higher.

Great idea for a thread and giveaway.

I think the most important thing with coin collecting is the same as in life: KNOWLEDGE IS POWER!

You will hear it over and over again, buy the book before the coin.
Although that statement doesn’t have to be taken literally, the idea behind it is extremely important and echos back to the fact that knowledge is power.
Learn as much as you can and never stop learning. Start small and study the coins you buy. Look at as many coins as you can. Go to shops and shows and listen to what the dealers and other collectors are saying. Ask questions. Absorb as much information as possible.

Also, what @Lehigh96 said about eye appeal is important. If you’re looking at two coins of the same date and mintmark and one is twice as much as the other because it has much more eye appeal, that is the coin you want to buy. You will be much happier in the future looking at the nicer coin and you won’t care at that point about the cost difference.
Good things aren’t cheap and cheap things aren’t good.

I feel so bad that I haven't been able to wrap this contest up.... Shortly after I started it, my car broke down. Then the AC in my attic broke and leaked and the ceiling in my guest room collapsed so I had to put that back together. Then, the garbage disposal in my kitchen sink blew a gasket and flooded things and I had to replace that.

The worst is, shortly after I posted last week that I was going to wrap this up... my grandfather fell and hit his head. After his trip the ER, they called in hospice and he's been going downhill all week. This morning he fell again, gashed his head and now has 2 staples. They expect he's got days to live. This has been one of the worst Thanksgiving weeks of my life. He's 95 and lived a good life (even got to fight some Nazi's in WWII, so he's super cool), but it's tough to see him go.

I really want to finish this contest, but honestly life has just been more important. I hope you all understand - and I will finish it when I get a breather.

My advice: Don’t buy items just because you can, especially problem coins. You’ll end up buying plenty of items that’ll prove difficult to unload in the future provided you attempt to sell.

I kind of skipped to the end of your post, and totally missed this segment.

Your Grandfather is a hero, my friend. He fought Nazis? Hero. He's in my thoughts tonite, as I love and respect all who defend tolerance and defend it.

Man, I wish the dog was my problem! That's an easy fix - get rid of the roommate! (it's her dog, and they are both sweethearts that have helped so much through all of this, so I'm so happy they live with me).

Yeah, he's my hero as well. He joined towards the end of the war (and might have lied about his age to join). He initially was trained as a minesweeper, but later transferred to artillery. He was the one who calculated the angle for the cannon on a tank. I'm not sure he actually fought in a battle, because he has more stories about Germans throwing down their guns (and a couple of racy stories with german girls that he told me one time I gave him too many martinis).

I love the man! I'll bet he had the tales to tell. :)

Never heard much from my father. He never spoke of the war. I would have loved to listen, though.

Totally understood. And by all means, take your time. I just keep an eye on this forum, mostly for housekeeping purposes, like making sure the old contests get marked as closed and eventually locked, is all. “In limbo” status gets confusing.

It’s not like I haven’t myself stepped away for several weeks or even months and forgotten about a pending contest. I totally have.

    A salute to your grandfather.

@physics-fan3.14 no apologies necessary. Coins and their related subjects are great, but family and life comes first. My thoughts and wishes go out to you and your "support team". Come back to this whenever you are in the right place in your life, everyone will understand.

As Jason knows all too well right now….

My advice is simple: prioritize life and budget. Put this hobby in perspective.
