1986 D CENT APPEARS TO BE COPPER & SILVER

    I am guessing the silver appearance is some type of deterioration that I don't remember
    ever seeing before. What do you guys think it is? I have been trying to clean this cent
    on and off for about a week now. When I first got it out of a paper roll, it was totally black. I put it under my microscope and could not see anything...Picture was all black.
    But like I mentioned, I have been cleaning it on and off for about a week...What do you
    think that silver looking stuff is??

    Zinc

    Copper plated zinc planchet. The plating was disturbed somehow exposing the zinc.

    This. Wear and tear to the copper plating exposed the zinc core.

    Bonus: environmental damage, too.

    ( Duhhh....Wake up Joe ) Thanks paddyman98, I appreciate the help!...I certainly am not an expert but I should have remembered that coin was copper plated. The only thing I can say in my defense is, " Hey! It's tough when you get old !!"
