All of those beauties are amazing gold pieces but I especially like the Chile 8 Escudos 1842! btw, which one is the priciest? Numbers not necessary, just wondering? That 1725 holding head is an amazing gold as well, love it!
Excellent buys John. I see you've been busy at Heritage I especially like the Bern 2 Ducats and the Mainz Goldgulden.
Saint Albans was a "pagan" living in Britannia under Roman rule. The Emperor Diocletian issued a decree that every person had to worship Roman Gods. Alban took pity on a priest hiding from religious persecution in Britannia, he hid him away in his house.Eventually, Roman soldiers found Alban and the priest. Albans had put on the priest's garments and declared his belief in the true God. He ended up being sentenced to death/ and was beheaded. Thus St. Albans Priory struck coins with the Saint holding his severed head.
Good to know as I have a severed head coin too, not as expensive or as rare as yours though! Headless coins are hard to come by!
John, Great coins as usual ! The Italian 2 doppie is my favorite . The portrait is stunning & the reverse coat of arms finely engraved. A true Baroque masterpiece. My 2nd favorite is the German 10 thaler coin . It has a fine low-relief portrait & the horse looks very energetic . The 1/4 dukat from the Braunschweig Mint with St. Albans is certainly bizarre & finely executed for such a small coin .
Glad you found it Just to let you know, your coins/ posts/ historical facts are always so nice to look at/ thanks for sharing that with us, I learned a lot! John
Thank you Al! Wish You and Your Family a Wonderfull New Year!!!! We are taking part in a great adventure with our hobby. You can go back in history when you look at each coins obverse/ reverse.....amazing The St. Albans Priory AV Dukat shows Roman cruelty at its best/ maybe the so called "barbarians" where tame in comparison..... John
What an impressive group. I'm so impressed I cannot even be jealous. I think the Edward IV half ryal is my favorite, in other words, the one I would most like to have in my collection. On the other hand, the one I cannot get out of my mind is the Saint Albans Goldgulden. Eerie!
Thanks! I managed to grab that Edward IV AV Half Ryal as a "unsold " lot. Over past ten years/ I probably got some of my best coins that way Wish You and Your Loved Ones a Happy/ Healthy 2022!!!!! John
