Hello, Well if its a first post it might as well be a nice one. Roll searching about a week ago, with my trusty list of coins to check, I find a 1982 DDR.
After a bit of research I find out that this is only the 3rd one to be found so far, thankyou ziggy9, if you read the post.

So the advise part, I do collect coins, but my main focus has been on older sets, and not really on an error collection. The roll hunting is more of a ' fun of the hunt type thing'. Would you send it off to get slabbed and to which grading service? I really have no desire to keep it so looking for input on other avenues of selling the coin other than ebay. Or would you feel ebay would net the highest return?

I hope the photos do the coin justice, if you feel that there should be more just ask.

    take care, photogame

Really nice find if it's zinc. An even better find if it's copper because I don't think one of those has been discovered yet.

I'm going through about 10 rolls of 1982 right now--wish I could find that.

BTW, from the first photo, it looks like zinc. Am I right?

    Photogame,
Congrats! Its about time another one turned up. I would not go Ebay with this. Check first with any third party grader to see if they will label it properly. This is a coin that has to be properly advertised before the sale. I would get it into a slab, consign it to Heritage Auctions, and let the major numismatic magazines know that it is going up for auction.

Ideally, if you don't need the money fast, wait until next summer for the ANA show in Boston. Heritage is running the auction for the show. Mine will be on display in the show and having two of the three in one place at one time might stir more free advertising.

    Just some thoughts,

    Richard

I would call the big three and ask them if they will slab it as the variety. If they will then PCGS is #1 followed by NGC and then ANACS. Mine is in a PCI slab because Charles Daughtry did all the work on it for me and he was involved with their signature series. If the top three won't slab it as the variety give Chuck a call and he can get it done by Dominion with their signature service.

Very nice find. Now that's the third best find since I've been here that's been found. Thanks for sharing.

I agree you should contact www.coppercoins.com That's the web site for Chuck. That story of his find in the Numismatic News on Feb, 26, 2008 showed numerous photos of that coin. From his photos the entire reverse appears to be doubled.
If it was me, I'd contact him and ask which TPGS he recommends. Regardless, if your not an error collector, my suggestion is to sell it for as much as possible now before many others pop up.
IF you knew for sure there were only 3 left on Earth, that would be different, but if many more start appearing, yours will loose value. Of course the reverse is also true that if no more appear and you have one of three, yours will constantly go up in value.
I just went back and looked at page 34 of that issue where all the photos are at. The ones there showed a lot of doubling on almost everything. Really noticable on the letters and the one in one cent. Also, posts in the building are doubled.
If yours does not have that much doubling, might be a different variety and if so, might be more out there.
    I'd sell the thing.

His coin is indeed the 1982 ddr of which there are now three. I would like to see the article you are talking about in the Feb 26, 2008 Numismatic News. The article of my discovery was in the oct 2, 2007 issue. compare the E PLURIBUS UNUM of the picture above to the one in my avatar and you will see that they are the same.

Nice find. I only wish I could be so lucky.

You asked about slabbing/selling it. If you are going to sell it, I would slab it. As to where, try either ANACS or NCS. I doubt seriously PCGS would grade it other than "GENUINE". That coin has a fair amount of green on it. If you can find a good NGC dealer and they think NCS could conserve the coin successfully (my guess is not), go with them. Otherwise, take your pick between ANACS and NCS. Both will detail grade it and attribute it.

As for where to sell it. That depends on how much you think it will go for and how much interest it will draw. The more the price and interest, the better off you would be with eBay. eBay's fees the lowest - most particularly for higher priced ($500+) items. That is a fact. However, I do not think that eBay gets the publicity you would get with Heritage or a similar auction house. That is an opinion.
