I dont know if the true gold color will show on the pics. The colored area is not raised or of a different surface texture from the rest of the coin. Any ideas what this is ? Thanks.
That's a new one on me. I would say it's a lamination, but I've never seen a lamination with the devices struck up on top of it You commented that the areas are not raised - but are they lower than the adjoining surfaces ? In the pics they appear to be.
Your right, I just looked at it again thru about 30x lens. The devices looked stamped directly over the color. And no, the surface is the same height as the rest of the field.... but I am going to dig out my micrometer tomorrow, that will detect any minute thickness difference. Also just noticed that the star is missing a lobe and the U is missing the upper left part of it, almost looks like a J. I remember stashing this dime away from my paper route change back in the 50's. By the way you always answer my questions with something that I never thought of, good job.
Check the field areas where the color changes occur - like at the E in UNITED and at the R in AMERICA. It certainly looks like there is a difference in height there between the gold colored and the silver colored.
Have you seen this on silver coins? The next time I run to town I'll stop at the coin store, they have the equipment to get a real closeup, and a lot more knowledge of coins than I do. Thanks for the ideas.
I would agree with the glue. I bought a book of coins that were taped in and several of them looked just like the pic.
Hi, It is absolutely the residue of glue of somesort. It is probably from tape. As I mentioned, I've seen it at least 100 times before and on cheap coins, i use nail polish remover to take it off. Have Fun, Bill
