Hi everyone, I've always wanted to acquire some German states coins but the topic is somewhat overwhelming given the number of states, cities and rulers that issued coins up to 1871. I thought I would start out small (and cheap! - looks pretty scrubbed clean) with this Wilhelm IV groschen 1858 - I assume A is a mint mark. I see there is a catalog in German specifically for these coins published in 1998 but apparently very hard to find and very expensive. To see if I like these coins I would like to try and get all the denominations for Wilhelm IV for one year (1858 since I have one already). Can someone point me to a reference or website that lists all the denominations by year? There are a lot of websites but none of them seem organized by ruler or what was issued in a particular year. This is the sellers photo since I don't have this in hand yet. Thanks!
I love German States! I think an easy way to do this, would be a targeted search on Numista.com. Here's what I pulled up with your request: https://en.numista.com/catalogue/index.php?r=wilhelm 1858&ct=coin
I also enjoy collecting coins of the German states. I like collecting examples from each state. I usually stick to lower denomination coins as they are generally cheaper, but many of the billon coins are affordable too. On a side quest, I also collect coins of the Swiss cantons and Italian states.
One of my focus areas is German States. This is the catalog that I use for issues 1800-1871 . An excellent reference, continually kept up to date and affordable. https://www.amazon.de/Großer-deutsc...2&hvtargid=pla-1288390645332&psc=1&th=1&psc=1
I collect coins from the german states and prussia in particular too but I dont see much sense in trying to get every denomination of this ruler from that year. I think the Double Thaler and the Goldkronen will be hard or atleast expensive to aquire. No idea if the other coins have 1858 as their rare date.
You could always try to do a date/mint set of Silber Groschens. I have about half of them from 1821-1873 (Friedrich Wilhelm III, Friedrich Wilhelm IV, and Wilhelm I). Something different than of filling the holes in a Whitman Lincoln Cent or Jefferson Nickel folder. Mine are circulated and mostly picked from junk boxes over the last 35 years.
Thank you for the reminder on this good book! I am pretty certain I’ve got one in my library, and it is a good one.
You guys have no idea how weird it is every time I see my not-so-common surname show up in a thread title. Makes me jump every time.
Thanks everyone for your replies - I will definitely pick up that book and take a broader look at the different rulers instead of starting out so narrowly.
I keep a digital copy of German Coins 1601-1997 on my computer. It is normally good enough for me. If you collect Thalers you can do a search with the Davenport number and jump right to it. Most of my new additions are German States coinage.
