Ladymarcovan has never questioned my coin purchases. Coin money begets coin money, and doesn’t come out of household money most of the time. And sometimes has gone into the household money, in times of need.

    Happy wife, happy life.

I’ve got a paycheck for the bills. What I spend my coin money on makes no difference, as long as that money came from the sale of other coins.

My apologies if I offended you in the slightest. Members of my own family sometimes find my love of numismatics to be rather peculiar at times (especially when I pay several hundred dollars to buy some old piece of paper).

    This 1885 Newfoundland $2 is…

    48 times rarer than a US 1909-S VDB cent…

    26 times rarer than a US 1916-D Mercury dime…

Rarer than a lot of Charlotte- and Dahlonega-mint US quarter-eagles…

And yet cost a fraction of what many of those would… in lower grades.

    “Criminally underrated”, indeed.

Suits me. I like the road less traveled.

You didn’t- not in the slightest.

It’s an important point. One doesn’t want one’s hobby to be a major drain on the household finances. I learned this in my previous marriage, when we were really broke. The first Ladymarcovan was not so tolerant of my collecting.

I had to learn to wheel and deal and trade and cherrypick to make my hobby self-supporting. Which it is… mostly. I do allow myself little splurges out of my non-coin funds once in a while. It’s not like I have any other hobbies that cost money.

My needs are simple. I drive a beat-up but paid-for 20-year-old car. I paid off the somewhat nicer car our daughter drives. Cable bill? Heck, we don’t even own a TV anymore.

I do not make very much money as a hotel clerk in GA (there are newly-hired fast food workers in NC making four bucks an hour more than I do, for less responsibility), but I manage to live within my means most of the time.

Truth be told, I went into debt with my dealer friend for this coin, but he knows I’m good for it.

Got some better pix, now she’s in hand. Still not pro quality, but passable, considering I shot them myself, through the plastic, with my phone.

I like how it’s got nice orangey color with lighter, lustrous highlights around the peripheries. There’s just the tiniest hint of sea-green iridescence in those areas.

    A super slider, for sure.

    That is a lovely coin!

Yup. Now that I'm 'retired' I committed to MOSTLY making coin purchasing a self supporting enterprise. And I've really sold a few things! One project is to really pare it down but that gets overwhelming. And it turns out I'm a bit busier than I thought I'd be. Plus sleep is good.
