Newfie = coin from Newfoundland. Newp = new purchase. An 1885 Newfoundland gold $2 piece of Queen Victoria, to be specific. A nice survivor from a modest original mintage of only 10,000 pieces. This one’s not quite in hand yet. Soon. All I presently have are these slab shots with glare off the plastic. Since it’s a slightly older PCGS slab (AU58) , there’s no TrueView image on the cert page, unfortunately. Edit: updated (better) pictures in Post #27. I used to have a holed 1881 example on my old Holey Gold Hat, back in the day. That was back when gold was cheap. Never thought I’d be able to afford a nice unholed example these days. The 1885 above was not cheap, but it’s mine now. I do love young-head Vickies. And Canadian Maritime Provinces stuff, for some reason.
Very beautiful coin! Newfie coin designs are amazing. Here is my only Newfie coin, a generous gift from @mikenoodle
Hey, yours is my coin’s little sister! Though “little” is perhaps deceptive, since your coin is physically larger than mine. To think, ten of yours would have got one of mine, back in St. John’s in Victorian times. Either handful would be appealing to see.
I’ve got quite a bit of stuff in older holders that I’ve been thinking about sending off; not for regrading but for Gold Shield/TrueView/reholdering. If I’m reading the submission form correctly, that should cost me about $18 a pop, plus shipping and insurance both ways. Might be worth it in the long run, but since I’m a cheapskate, I’ve procrastinated on that.
Really cool pick up Rob congratulations buddy you deserve it, for all you do here on CT. I sold my 1943 NF dime at the Richmond show....it afforded me some working capital to hunt my half dimes. I still have my Maritime cents and half cents they aren't for sale....nor will ever be. So if this one is coming into the box....whats leaving? Inquiring minds like to know, lol.
I’ve not quite yet gone back to a fixed-quantity collection. Kinda plan to do that when I reach 100 pieces. (I’m back down to ninety-something at the moment.) Since the new Newfie above represents Canada well enough for my Eclectic Box purposes, I might eventually kick this large cent over to my Swap/Sell/Giveaway inventory when the time comes to start pruning again.
You want the large cent? OK, I’ll send it to you now, then. Well, next time I mail something. Which will be soon, since @masterswimmer just bought @NLL a gift from my inventory, which I should be shipping in the next day or two.
Thank you I do have a fondness for Canadian coins. I spent many a summer at Lake Huron Grand Bend ,Ont. Great memories! It the variety #1418 die crack
I still need to find out how to grade Canadian large cents though! Is there a website like PCGS Photograde except for Canadian coins?
Impressive! Newfoundland coins are criminally underrated; however, I doubt that ladymarcovan was all that pleased with your decision. You might find this relevant Matthew. http://www.saskatooncoinclub.ca/articles/12_grading_canadian_coins-ver2.html
