Well I just found in an old box my 1960's Lincolns cent collection. These were the pennies I pulled from change as a kid....most are "G" condition a few less and a few better ones. Now remember I was like 7 ~,8 years old in the early 1960's .Back in the day that I may get a nickel a day for penny candy at school , or a bag of potato chips. So yes a dollar was worth a dollar....and for a nickel you could get an 1 scoop ice crean cone....At Genos you could get a burger, fries, and a small milk shake for a quarter! Yep lunch for a quarter....unless you were eaten by a dinosaur while heading to lunch...lol.
I purchased a Lincoln cent book for the series 1909- 1940. As my old Whitman album was shot....I pulled out all my Lincolns gave them a acetone dip and put them back in the new album.
I have hopes of finding the holes with similar grades so my penny book will finally be finished.
I was never a Lincoln collector but managed over the early years to pull all of these in this folder from "the wild"!
Yepper I do believe that an uncle gave me a nice 1909 VDB but I kept that one separate. I glad I did as I lost this uncle before I was in Junior high school. So it was a special coin to me.
So why am I boaring you with this....well those of you who aren't dinosaurs never had the fun of enjoying the hobby where you got one for one! Meaning you could go to the bank get a 50 cent roll of cents and find coins one needed for your whitman penny album.
And here is the real challenge esspecially if you lived on the right or left coast!
As the East coast there were plenty of Philly minted coins...very few D or S mint marks! Wow to find a S mm on a penny was huge....huge! And remember the same was for those on the left coast or smack dab in the middle.
Also remember that people did not fly or travel coast to coast.....and when you did fly you got dressed up big time.
Men in suits and hats...women in dresses of a business like suit.
You ate very well...steak potatoes carrots...and of course one could smoke on a flight! Yup its true....
So to stop boring you any futher...if you weren't lucky enough to get dressed up and fly,and enjoy the second hand smoke of a" Lucky Strike" this is how you put you penny collection together.
Pocket change, lucky finds....and sometimes a uncle who slip you a cool coin......oh also remember all the coins other than pennies, were 90% silver.....yeppers it pinged when dropped. :) 20211115_161148.jpg 20211115_161057.jpg 20211115_161038.jpg

All found in the wild.....as my first time I ever went to a coin shop I was in my teens.

Please join in you dino's and post simular albums that have tested time.

You ain't boring me @Paddy54. Your days of youth were a lot like mine, I just started a little earlier (1948). Nice set.

My IHC's are in an old Whitman with Scotch Tape all over it to hold it together.

Very, very cool, Paddy. Yeah, I too have my Whitman cent books that I 90% filled in the 60’s and 70’s. I filled those remaining impossible holes just ten years ago…. I won’t ever show that book here on CT. It is quite humble!…… I had a dealer when I was a kid that was conveniently located between school and my home. He kept a giant jug of wheat cents that I would plunder with my lunch money each day filling holes in that old Whitman. If memory serves I could get three wheats for a nickel and there were many times I would sweep his floors and such for free digs into his wheat jug. Yeah, those were the days!

Similar experience helping people back then was always good for a few cents.

    Awesome.

Only two coins from my childhood collection survived the millennium.

I've had both of these since 1976.

The Merc dime is the coin that got me started collecting. It was found on Thanksgiving Day of that year, in my step-grandmother's silverware drawer while setting the table for the big feast. So I'm coming up on my 45th anniversary as a collector, next week! Seems impressive, but compared with @Inspector43's tenure, well... ;)

I got this one for my 11th birthday a month later, on December 28, 1976, after family members had learned I had started collecting coins.

I was just talking with my little brother about this. When we were about 9 or 10 we were digging in the back yard and came up with an 1886 Liberty Nickel. He still has it.

Here is my wild Lincoln set, all from circulation. I never found the difficult ones. Those in the late 40's and into the 50's were found while they were still fresh off the press. IMG_6222.JPG IMG_6223.JPG IMG_6224.JPG IMG_6225.JPG

Well, maybe a little less now that you posted a nickel. ;) Just kidding of course; people who know me know I am not a fan of nickels, but it is a cool error, so I'll go ahead and give a like for it.

@Paddy54 my Whitman looks almost exactly like yours (same holes). Also found in the wild. Mine was done late 60's to mid 70's. The right coast didn't get those coveted D & S mm's like you said.

This gets my vote for the most fun post in some time. A lot of us geezers (I've been practicing geezing a lot lately) have old albums like that. My kids and grandkids don't want them, alas.
