The Matron Head was Minted from 1816 -1839 . The Coronet large cent was a type of large cent issued by the United States Mint at the Philadelphia Mint from 1816 until 1839 Post yours if you have one please .
United States: copper large cent, Coronet type, 1818; likely from the Randall Hoard found in 1869 PCGS MS62 BN. Quite a lot of original red remaining here, for a coin with the BN (brown) designation. Note the prominent circular die break on the obverse. (Sadly, this one is no longer mine. I miss it. Another forum member owns it now.)
Bet you found that one detecting, eh, Sal? Cool find, if so. My dig buddies down here have found dozens, including some really sweet early ones, but I personally only found three large cents in all my diggin' days. They were all three different types: the first was a dateless (1796-1807) Draped Bust found at an old Rev War shipyard site, the second was an 1837 Coronet/Matron found on an old plantation site, and the third an 1850 on a Civil War campsite (I also dug a nice CW button next to that last.)
@lordmarcovan Plenty of Large Cents in my 15 years or so of detecting . All around old ( Pre-Civil War ) Or earlier . One General service button , Civil war but always wanted a GW Button ! Never found one but knew a guy who found 4 in one day !! Here's mine ...
ALL large cents are pre-Civil War. Sounds like you've definitely dug more large cents than I did, but I might have you on CW buttons. Not that I dug a lot- but I do have a little case full of various military buttons, many Civil War and some earlier. Only two were Confederate. Even down here in the Deep South- at least in my area- Yankee buttons are far more common than Confederate. Yeah, a George Washington Inaugural button is one of the crown jewels of American relic hunting. You've got a definite edge on those up there in the North. I haven't heard of any being found down here in the South, though it wouldn't surprise me if one or two have turned up.
@lordmarcovan I would think that their would be more what many call down there , Plantation finds like pottery, glass, tokens, tags ,old locks etc...
That's because Sherman and his boys was running all over your neck of the woods back in the day..........
I'm always confused between the Matron Head and the Coronet Head. The former has the fat chin? And the latter, a slimmer chin? Anyway, I have this one, but with corrosion.
Yep. They captured this island early, in ‘62. Two years even before Sherman and his boys came through. Johnny Reb wisely retreated inland, not too keen on catching shellfire from the US Navy.
A rare and very sought-after George Washington inaugural button, which are sort of the crown jewel of button finds here in the US, if you’re a relic hunter. There were several types. if Sal’s buddy found FOUR in one day, it’s a day he will remember for the rest of his life! Rare Confederate local buttons and stuff like the buttons and belt plates of esoteric forces like the Republic of Texas Navy are also the sort of things relic hunters lust after, depending on the region they live in. My most monetarily valuable detecting find was not a coin, but a bent and corroded pewter belt plate of the US Light Dragoons from the War of 1812. Though in rough shape, it might have been the only intact example known. The reference book showed only some fragments of one! I got $990 for it on eBay, 19-20 years ago. The buyer later said he’d have gone as high as $1,250. Some folks will gobble up that early militaria, and not care that it’s dug. In fact, obviously-dug stuff is more likely to be authentic.
