Just received these from an eBay auction (source of picture.) It may not be a super buy but I like them both cause I DO like steam engines. :high5: (Price was ok, too: $37.

Here is what used to be in my hometown. I worked for them one summer (1968) and made it to their round house one day. They had 5 of them in there - all decked out. All I could and can say is WOW! They wound up using one at the local museum, but I do not know what happened to the rest. They were in a lot of ways the largest steam engine ever made. BTW, you (Canada) now owns whatever is left. Oh, green18, Pennsy also went through along with the Erie, B&O and the P&LE.

They were still running steam in '68? What a marvoulous experiance. Ever visit the Pennsylvannia Railroad Musem? Visited there myself back in the early 80's. What a marvelous experiance I had back then. Got to ride on an old coal burner through the Amish country. One of these days I'm gonna make it back there.......

They were runnable, not running. They pulled them out in the early to mid-50's. Been to a museum in KC, Fort Worth, and OKC; rode one in Durango and Fort Worth; but I have never even made it to my home town one. From what I have heard, it may be nicer than all the rest.

I think there's one of those running in BC...a coastal excursion? And we've one in the Aviation Museum here in Ottawa. (Yeah, I know. But thats how it started out - it GREW! Oh, there may be one in Jasper, BC. They were used a lot for mountain travel.

My grandfather worked for the B&O in W Virginia. I'll never forget watching the half dozen engines belching in the Grafton roundhouse...well, some of them were belching. I was just a wee kid and you know how things look so much bigger them. :) And where I grew up, Bluffton, Indiana had the Nickel Plate with a big yard and the ran steam for a few of my younger years.

They were dirty and smelled bad but I MISS them. We have a 262 running day trips here from Ottawa to Wakefield QC. Summer only, except for a Thanksgiving dinner train. I'm lucky enough to have reason to drive to Wakefield a couple times a month when it's sitting and waiting (and steaming) for the return trip.

    Ahh....memories....

Nice collection items. I enjoy the old steam engines. I've ridden the Durango trains in Colorado -- what a great time.

Since we're on the subject I thought Id add a couple more coins:

"CANADA 1986 Dollar issued in commemoration of the 100TH anniversity of the inauguration of the Transcontinental Railroad and the centenary of the city of Vancouver."

    And the "1981, Trans-Canada Railway"

That was an interesting trip in more than one way. It was a bit dry that day, week, month,... They think it was our trip up that set the woods on fire that they were trying to put out on the way back.

I love steam trains, we have quite a few still running here in the UK and they are great fun to visit and ride. My Father was a fierman on one after he got out of the army for a while and I use to love his stories :smile Thanks for sharing them with us :hail:

The UK issued a £2 coin which shows up in circulation to honor the 200th Anniversary of the first steam locomotive created by Richard Trevithick's in 1804.
