Out of curiosity, I decided to Google "sestertius song" to see if there was any music about the hefty Roman bronze denomination. Well, I got this bit of techno/synthpop! Let's have a rave! A sestertius rave!!! Decius and the Pannoniae will be there!!! Post your favorite sestertii! Bonus points for figures that appear to be dancing!
Hadrian square-dancing with Roma? Dos-i-do? Hadrian Æ Sestertius (133-135 A.D.) Rome Mint [HADRI]ANVS AVG COS III PP, laureate, draped bust right / ADVEN[TVS AVGVSTI] S-C, Hadrian standing right (on left) holding roll, clasps hands with Roma standing left (on right) holding spear. RIC II.3 2063 (old RIC 742) (22.51 grams / 29 mm) eBay May 2020
Noice!!! "Nothing in excess. Except mushies. Where are my mushies!?" - Marcus Aurelius Minerva doing some disco dancing (Look at those pupils)
NYINC can be a little high-brow and stuffy, imho. Say what you want about Caligula but the man knew how to throw a party. Just a suggestion, not a real event.
This Marcus Aurellius is currently my favorite sestertius, mostly because it just came in the mail today! It's also theme appropriate because the eagle on the reverse has it's wings in the air! Rave!
Trebonianus Gallus with Pietas grooving with a tambourine - obviously the authorities missed this in their descriptions. I put a call into RIC Trebonianus Gallus - Anton. (251-253 A.D.) Branch Mint (Milan?) IMP C C VIB TREB GALLVS AVG, radiate, draped, cuirassed bust right / PIETAS AVGG, Pietas veiled, standing left by altar, raising both hands. RIC 72; RSC 88; Sear 9643. (4.14 grams / 24 x 22 mm) eBay Feb. 2018
You baseball fans have heard of the Green Monster at Fenway Park right? Well I've got my own green monster in this 30 gram, 35mm sestertius of Antoninus Pius with a magnificent patina. Indulgentia Seated. (The Roman concept of indulgentia did not have the negative connotation it retains in English. Indulgentia was the personification of leniency, pardon, kindness, gentleness, and the remission of sins. The term took on a negative aspect during the Protestant Reformation, with the backlash to the Catholic Church’s selling of “indulgences.”)
Whip it. Whip it good... That sent me down a rabbit hole of YouTube videos last night watching Devo, Blondie (who they've been on tour with in recent years), Talking Heads ... I saw Devo playing live at the 1978 Knebworth rock festival in the UK ... they were not well received by a crowd expecting more conventional fare!
Pupienus has a baggy eyed look because he stayed up watching Abba videos. See the dancing queen with a tambourine on the reverse:
Unfortunately, I don't have any images that resemble dancing on sestertii, or on any coins for that matter..... Here's my sestertius of Julia Domna
Wow, that is a spectacular green monster. I have three of these, for some reason (lack of eBay discipline) but not one nearly as nice as yours: And yes, you can "rave" in a chair (this thread is expanding my horizons when it comes to dancing):
"Would you like to dance with me, while I step on this crocodile?" Just for the record, it's called trance
