I think it used to be illegal to own error coins. Among other things, the government claimed that the mint didn't make mistakes so any mistakes could be confiscated as counterfeits. Did Joe buy his first error Ike?

Ah, you might be onto something...he sent off a bunch of silver coins and some other silver scrap (some being owned by the wife) to be melted into a large silver bar that he will be getting back in a few weeks. Was melting U.S. coinage against the law back in the day? -LTB
