That's one very beautiful collection of Morgan's your friend put together @Vertigo Something to be proud of for sure. Question for anyone in the know....What does the label with 'Sample' mean? I should know and I'm embarrassed to ask.
I thought it was when the TPGs were giving out a sample of their new holder design at a show or something. It’s interesting how CAC will put a sticker on one. Beautiful collection, I’d love to flip through it.
And if that isn't enough this guy had a house fire about 4 or 5 years ago. He lost a lot of coins. I'm not sure how or why these survived. Even the coins in his safe were destroyed. I actually have some i was attempting to get melted plastic off of to identify date and mint marks. That this collection survived is a miracle really. Here is an example. These were in a safe. These weren't so lucky...
Hey @Vertigo , Aren't most safes fired rated and insured ?? Or Homeowner's ?? Just wondering . Was it a Sentry ?
It's also unusual for the sample to actually have a grade on it like that one does which is what CAC went off of. You're right they're generally things given out at shows/lunches etc, but the overwhelming majority have no grade unlike that one.
I have seen a couple others and a couple peace dollars. 22/23 or something. But not many is true. I have accumulated a nice hoard of Kennedy and roosevelt samples. Patiently waiting until CAC accepts those series!
There's definitely some others out there with grades on them, which really aren't grades imo to just say MS. I think it was a good thing they started leaving the place holder grades off them or at least the numbers and made samples actual samples
This one went up fast and hot. He barely had time to get out himself. I don't think it mattered. I imagine he had insurance but still. Coins lost are lost. I'll find out what kind. I think there were a few actually. But even sentry can only withstand a certain amount of heat a certain amount of time. The house was a complete loss. Some coins did survive but the holders melted. He was able to salvage and send some back in and they graded back straight again.
I especially like the ones without the CAC sticker. Just my opinion. Congratulation on you're set, very nice indeed.
Fantastic post. Great set. My Morgan registry set is 10% complete. I love Mogans. So many looks to them.
Same, and these were bought years ago. I can't imagine what this would cost now. I do know that he sent most of these to cac himself. This guy knows morgans pretty good. When he sends 20 morgans in 20 pass. He'll usually get at least one gold too. So he didn't pay the cac markup on a lot of them. He said he is still looking for some to replace the missing fatties/cac but it's pretty impressive the way it is.
