Found this at the local shop yesterday, along with 4 early imperials (augustus, claudius, domitian, and maybe drusus, these only being 2-4 dollar coins though) and one of gordian III that was fairly crusty on most of it. but blast white on other spots lol, so its gona be blast white but with lots of promise and good detail. ill post pics later though. It was on a very old want list I had forgoten about and just popped up. Quite a bit of exposed metal (which looks a bit interesting) Pontos, Amisos. Circa 85-65 BC. Æ 21 mm Bust of Amazon right, wearing wolfskin headdress / AMISOU, Nike walking right, holding wreath in right hand, palm over left shoulder. SNG BMC Black Sea 1218-1219; SNG Stancomb 704; SNG Copenhagen 165.
haha, guess I'll file this under "no one gives a crap" right next to next to byzantine. maybe you guys will like the one of Gordian III when I post it
Hey hey! I like this one. The exposed metal on it is actually fairly attractive. I've noticed it on most of the coins from that region and time period. It probably has something to do with how the finders decided to clean it.
heres some of the others mentioned. gordian III is cleaning nicely, after being soaked way to long in lemon juice  ( was unable to get to it ) this is the before pic.
cant find teh ref. on it, but rev. is similar to this: Ref Gordian III AR Antoninianus, RIC 37, RSC 210 Gordian III AR Antoninianus. IMP CAES M ANT GORDIANVS AVG, radiate, draped bust right / P M TR P II COS P P, Gordian, togate, standing left with wand & sacrificing from patera over lit altar. RIC 37, RSC 210. http://www.wildwinds.com/coins/sear5/s8637.html#RIC_0037 but the obv inscription is different. Mines IMP CAES GORDIANVS PIVS AVG do you think its a mule?
thanks, Gordian still needs a lil more cleaning, and hopfully with tone well for $12 it turned out good.
The Gordian is a scarcer version RIC 54 dated March-May? 240 according to RIC. Earlier ones lack Pius in the legend while later ones add FEL. I'd clean off the rest of the red (lemon, time and finger rubbing followed by washing to get rid of the acids). I like the Amisos but strongly prefer the first photo which has light on the face. I admit not being a fan of the Claudius and Domitian preferring coins with reverses (although I do have a few in that category so I can't complain too much.
Thanks ! yeah I have Gordian soaking in lemon juice atm. It does have some scratchs on it but over all looks pretty good. The first pic of Amisos is the one I used for my forvm gal. but the 2nd (which isnt my pic) shows its color more accurately and is more clear. Been trying different lighting. The As of Claudius was $4 and Domitian only 2.75 and its hard to pass up cheap early imperials for me Though I like the portrait of Claudius on that one and was able to clean off some crust on the back. I can make out S C and the lower 3rd of Libertas
Seeing that I have a fetish for really worn ancients, i am against the public opinion on the Domitian andj the Claudius. Now, as consvl of this place, I demand you to show Drusus. stainless
http://www.mlahanas.de/Greeks/Cities/AmisosSamsun.html http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Samsun I learned something today: The Greeks used articles before names so Amisos would be called 'The Amisos'. This is Eis Amison which got shortened to the current city name Samsun. Many major cities of antiquity are just ruins in the middle of the desert today. This one is still there.
Its like an addiction whne I see the cheap early imperial coins.:high5: I may be totaly wrong on Drusus :whistle:which isnt photgraphing well, but I was only going the portrait, and I'm still tryen to make some letters out. Thanks , Samsun, Turkey (pontus) the coin was minted during the reign of Mithradates VI Thanks Doug
heres an updated pic of the one of Gordian III, theres a few spots remaining but I think I'm gona leave it, (besides I'm out of lemon juice XD )
