Overpaying for a coin with $30 is a whole lot easier to swallow than paying $3000 for a $2000 coin. I think all of us have "overpaid" for a coin one time or another; especially raw coins that turn out to have problems.

 

I paid for an ungraded 1892 with good luster, very little ware and great strike on E-bay...$19 and very happy!

 

The 1892 is favored over the '93 but they are all keepers in my opinion, yours included. Thanks for sharing.

 

That's how I got my circulated coin. Lots of them produced (4,052,105) and put in circulation, so not too expensive, even in MS grade.
If you have a phone that will connect to the internet, you could check prices before purchasing, but that's now hindsight, isn't it?

 

It's called tuition. If you keep paying for the same mistake, then you obviously didn't learn anything the first time you took the course and are paying for another semester.
When in doubt, just ask the dealer what the price is in the Greysheet. Then let them figure a price from there. No need to expect to pay wholesale prices, but not double retail.

 

Well, but don't stop, now, or be too bummed...go ahead and find the "real companion" piece to this...the 1892-dated version (same coin, different date) to have the set.

 

As long as you're happy with your purchase, all is good, Noah..........but I think you could have done a 'tad' better price wise. Did you try to negotiate with the dealer? That's always an option in any purchase scenario. When buying, I always ask the dealer if that's his best price, and when he comes back with a $ amount, I ask him if that's the price for tourists.....now what do you sell it for to the 'locals'? That always gets them and they usually knock a few bucks off.

when i was a wee lad of 10 or so (when i frist started my coin collecting, but before dealing..me and me G Ma' went to the dump up in copake, ny to dump some rubbish from her (then) summer house on the lake..and i was wandering around looking at all the neat junk, i saw a purse, i picked it up and went through it, and found an expo half in xf/au condition...since then any time i see a purse at a tag sale/flea market or in a junk pile on the side of the road i always look inside em...

I don't have a coin shop on my area, either. I also don't have a "coin budget". My collection is very important to me, and I collect what I like. If I happen upon a coin I like, or need to fill a spot in my collection, and have the money to afford it, I generally will buy it. Generally, as already mentioned, you can talk the dealer down in price, but sometimes they won't budge off their price. Then I have a decision to make. First, do I have the money? Second, do I want this coin for my collection, even though I may be over paying? I try to think about how many of that coin have I seen for sale? When will the opportunity present itself, again, where I have the money, and coin in hand to look at and decide if I like it? If it "doesn't feel right", I walk away. But, if it's one I've been looking for and have seen very few of, and I don't get a "bad" feeling about, then I buy the coin for "me". I'm not trying to buy for someone else, and I'm not trying to make money on a coin for my collection. My collecting is a hobby, not a business. I don't ever plan on selling my collection (Did that one time, don't plan on doing it again. Unless times were "hard"). So, I collect for the fun of it, basically. I enjoy my hobby. If buying a coin makes me happy, then I made a good purchase, to me! Again, we're talking about lesser expensive coins, not paying $3000 for a $2000 valued coin, as pointed out, already by @wxcoin. Enjoy your coin. You felt good about it when you bought it, continue to feel good about it. And now, look for the 1892 one at a better deal!

I'm fairly certain that I overpaid for this one, but I've only seen ONE up for sale in the last year of looking.

I've seen hundreds if not thousands of Columbian half dollars a month.
