if you guys had a choice between a complete set of silver american eagles or a uncirculated roll(unknown date) of walking liberty halves what would you buy?

I like large silver coins, so I'd probably go Eagles.

The roll of ??? date WL are not a good deal....the guy before you or before him KNOW what dates they are and I bet you wouldn't find any keys...but since they are UNC they might be good for your collection...but then again...more than likely they are low BU coins...MS60/61/62...

The ASE is a set most anybody can do and at any time...if you like the hunt...do buy the set...go out and buy one here and one there....
Its cheap...and easy and with some looking you can find HIGHER grade BU ASE....

Speedy - Take this for what it's worth but since you have money burning a hole in your pocket, you might consider pre-1815 coins. As an investor as well as collector, I have noticed a shift in the past few years towards the dwindling supply of these, especially in grades 'F' and up. The rise has been steady at about 15%/year for several years (more so as the grade rises) and with the increasing number of Japanese (one recently bought 800 Bust Dollars from a dealer pal), the price is predicted to continue its rise.

I have seen my own type set appreciate $15,000 in the last 14 months. While modern silver and gold will hold their value, the real rise (IMHO) is in rare old issues. Alas, the old law of supply and demand is still in effect.

    Good luck,

I don't have much money in my pocket...just a tad---I was just giving some suggestions here....
That is where I don't get investing...investers always have to watch the market long and hard (Not that we collectors don't) and try to second guess what will happen...like this pre 1815 coins...sure I like them alot but I'm not going to drop a $$$ just to get them...that is why I call myself a collector...I don't pay mind to the $$$...if I like it and have the $$ I buy it...and if its before 1815...great...if its not...to bad...as long as its not clad....I like it--and I hate to say it but even some clad coins are nice ;)

Very interesting comments. I had not thought of the Japanese as buyers of numismatics, if the U.S. went into a long-term unwinding of debt and what that might lead to here. Japan may very well be at or near the end of a twenty year decline. Very interesting scenario. Thanks!

Of course, I would suggest one should rarely buy anything with the attitude, or at the time, they have "money burning a hole in their pocket."
