Can anyone tell me when this series started for the silver bullion series. I have 2007 as the first date. Is this correct? Thanks.

First issued in 2007 by the Perth Mint, is my understanding.

That is what I thought, but the research I was doing kept on turning up 1997 as the date. I believe what they meant was that the koala coin was first introduced in 1997 as a platinum bullion coin. Then gold followed a few years later. I just wanted to know about the silver version, and from everything that I have read, it started in 2007, but I just wanted some confirmation. Thanks Jody.

  6. Yes, 2007 is FYOI. Even though they are bullion coins, I have decided to put together a complete year set over time. Same with the silver philharmonics which started in 2008. I think the silver Koala bullion coins are under-appreciated. I know that some do not like animals on coins but many adore the chinese panda bullion coins. The Koala mintages are quite modest compared to other silver bullion coins, and I have been able to get them each year at or below spot. TC

what about the kookaburra's and the kangaroo's?

  8. Those do not seem to have the same admiration as the pandas. I do like them though but feel I missed the boat on the earlier years and do not want to pay the premium now. TC

I believe that Perth Mint thought the Kangaroo series (introduced in 1990) was getting a little long in the tooth and needed a replacement. But it appears the series is as popular as ever and that they'll continue with both, which I'm happy with because I get both each year, and the kook too.

Strangely, I haven't got into the Lunar series. The only one I like is the 2010 - Year of the Tiger.
