Picked up this 1956D Jefferson from the same seller that I got the last golden Jefferson. Toning is very similar, and looks like Capital Plastics toning on both sides of the coin. I like the Golden Jeffersons very much, obviously.
I do like that honey gold color...... You mentioned something that I have apparently missed. I know about coin catalog toning, envelope toning and all... First time I heard of Capital Plastics toning. I keep some old proof sets in Capital holders. Do they tone our coins too?
Very frequently. There seem to be chemicals in the Capital holders that react with Nickels, at the very least. I have owned several and @Lehigh96 has had quite a few that toned from that brand of holder. So, I would imagine it is probably more extensive than we anticipate.
I have seen plenty of toned coins in capital plastics holders. Still I think that it is storage conditions related, compared to an off gassing from an album or envelope.
Agreed. The mint set, or proof set cellophane toning is generally more vivid in color, and produces Blue, Violet, and bright Yellow coins, that appear to be QT, but are caused by the gas from the cellophane. That is, unless someone injected gas into the proof sets/mint sets.
While I have seen many toned coins in capital plastic holders, I just can't bring myself to believe that inert plastic is the source of the toning, and the toning is almost always to advanced to be caused by simply hydrogen sulfide gas in the atmosphere. My personal theory is that people filling capital plastic sets will often do so with the best and most attractive coins they can find. So rather than crediting the capital plastics holder, I assume that the coins were plucked from Danscos (et al) in order to complete the capital plastic holder. To that end, I think your new, and very attractive 56-D, is an album toner, as evidenced by the deeper toned colors at the peripheries.
I defer to your expertise, as you are the King of Jeffersons. It did not occur to me that they were previously in a Dansco album, and then moved to a Capital Plastics holder. That is quite logical.
This is not my coin, but is currently for sale on eBay. I have a few proofs like this one, and they were toned inside of the proof set cellophane. If it was not certified as a PF 67, I would have considered it possibly QT.
This is from my birth year set, which came to me 3 or 4 years ago in a Capitol Plastics holder. I have no idea when it went into that folder, but all 5 coins look like they came from the same set and have been together for 71 years. I do like this color.
