how do the dies work? is the date a seperate die? or are the dies one peice? does look like a 5 over 8.
i think that will happen when they re-use a die and try to fix it from one year to the next... not sure here though... going from an 8 to a 5 is quite a long wait to re-use a die... possible faked if its a key date for the series?? or if its a key error coin...
If the coin turns out to be legit, I beieve it will be a new variety, 45-D is far from a key date for the series. It is possible that it is an 8 but more likely to be a 3 if the die was re used . since the series ended in 1945, with the release of the Roosevelt . Thanks for checking it out !! Rick
Hi All, I know this wont be a popular thought but I checked the shape of a 3 on the 1943 dated Winged-Liberty "dimes" The shape of what appears on the coin pictured does not resemble the 3. The 3 used on 1943 dated pieces has a long, pointed tail that does not come back up as would be the case of the in question digit on the 1945 coin in the pic. For it to be an 8 makes almost no sense. While in theory anything can happen, I still suspect that it is some type of odd metal flow involved with the striking of the coin. Oddly enough, it does look like a 5 over 8, but it is likely not more than a coincidence. I'd really be curious as to what Mike thinks on this one. Have Fun, Bill
Yup, gonna have to disagree with you on a few points "Odd medal flow" just doesn't cut it for me. If such a instance happened, I'd expect there'd be more examples of it on the coin, even in such a localized area. HERE'S a picture of a 1938 courtesy of www.coinfacts.com Note that the 3 does not have a downward pointing tail like those used on lincoln cents. So it could be a 45/38, or a 45/43. Here's to hoping its a 45/38....that'd really be something eh? Metalman: Can you post a pict of the entire coin obverse and reverse? It'd help rule out other common varieties/errors and may give more clues. Thanks
Hi, There's something I didnt even consider. The 8 looks like the one on a 1938. Also , the distance that the 8 is from the edge of the coin looks good on your coin as compatred to a 1938. I wonder what the chances are of them reworking a die from 1938 to use in 1945. That is an interesting question!! Have Fun, Bill
if you look real close, and it could just be imagery distortion, but it looks like the figure '8' intersects with the 5 at the points where the curves on the backside of the '8' connect with the 5..... which is at the bottom curve of the 5 and at the middle 'shelf' of the 5. the spot on the top shelf of the 5 where the other connect point would be for the 5 and the ghostly '8' is bleached out from the flash and i cannot make it out.
Hi All, I compared it to a not so hot 1938, If someone could scan a better 1938 and post it, it would be fun to look at. Interesting?? Bill
I did an overlay of the two images, and the 8 of the 38 does seem to line up pretty good with the one in the 45, though nothing else does (which could just be differences in the two images)...
And then it could just be my eyes....it doesn't pop out at me like a number...I thought about cud but that doesn't seem right.....maybe a RPD (like a RPM but this time with the date)....but then that doesn't seem right.... Speedy
Pretty cool !!! Thanks for that !! Speedy, Im going to submit this coin to coneca ,, I think its worth authenticating !! Rick
