I usually just use Whitmans that I pick up off the shelf from Hobbytown and the like, but I had heard whispers of them not being good for coins? I don't really have anything too terribly nice, but I do have several Indian cents in a book and some other stuff that is important to me at least.... Can Whitman books damage my coins over time?
Not really sure to be honest, I'm very much a newb but if that's all I have to worry about then that's good enough for me.
If you want your coins to look the same in the future as they look now, take them OUT of the book! Whatever color the paper of the book is what color they will turn in time. I never use those books from any company. I put my state Quarters on one of those books as they came out, and now they have all turned yellow (Littleton book)
Billy, that's patently untrue. The coins will not turn the same color as the book. It's not like the dye leaches onto the coins. If the paper has a high sulfur content, the coins may tone, but that's about it. If you have circulated coins of lower value, don't worry about it. I've seen many fine collections in those folders. I don't use them personally, but that's just a choice I've made. There are nicer albums by Dansco that have little plastic slides. If you're careful using them, they can be a little more protective. Or, if you're really worried about toning, you could just place the coins in individual 2x2 holders, and then in an album page for display. There are lots of methods of storing coins. You have chosen an inexpensive one, and you could eventually see some toning, depending on the type of coins you have. In most cases, this is not worrisome.
It IS true, and I have 50 yellow state quarters to prove it. Even the later ones have already started to turn yellow. I will try and capture it in photos to prove how true it is.
These are crappy pictures but I think it shows what I am talking about...especially the last two pictures!
Interesting toning effect Bill. Can't understand the "yellowing" but I will say this. I don't care what album you put your coins into, in time they will begin to tone. I've got Danscos and Intercept Shields and some of the coins contained therein are experiencing toning....
The only bad thing I heard about it is that is schraches the rim. (rimlines) Thoes will be nice toning in a few years.
Bill, I agree with Ken. Get those out of that album. I use Whitman Deluxe albums with all my sets and have not experienced anything remotely close to what you are showing. As Borgovan states, toning in an album is a direct result of the amount of "chemicals" in the paper and the amount of contact the coins have with the air.
Bill. tho my newer ones havent as of yet, but alot of my state quarters that are stored in 2x2;s and then put in albums are starting to tone up like that as well. I find it looks like tea-staining, Im still wondering if your album is responsible.
I have had good luck with Dansco and Intercept Shield. However, you also need to consider the environment in which you store the albums as well (temperature, humidity, etc.). If you have a few IHC or other stuff that you are particularly fond of, you may want to consider moving these few select pieces to airtites. TC
I'm not too concerned as I have extras of almost all of them and could get the extras I don't have yet easily...I figure someday I'll sell this as a set to toning collectors...We'll see if that ever happens! I'm just glad this happened on State Quarters, which was the only coins I collected from 99-08, and not my whole collection! (also glad it happened on something I have extras of!)
Billy, I was not saying you didn't have yellow quarters in a yellow folder. It's altogether possible that the paper is of high sulfur content, and rapidly toned your quarters yellow. I was just dismissing the correlation between the color of the folder, and the color of the toning. If I put coins in a green folder, for instance, they're not necessarily going to turn green.
I don't know if anyone brought this up before or if anyone has had the same experience but the couple of Whitman folders that my wife has are terrible. I don't know why but they seem to have made them super tight fitting and you have to practically damage the dollars to get them in. I think we've had the same problem with the quarter folders as well but not as bad. I was told Whitman folders are made in China but I don't know for certain.
