I'm playing with the camera this weekend. Tell me what you think. Is it real? Grade? Would PCGS grade it? Could NCS help it?
Is it real? Nothing I see says that it is not real. I can even make out the die chip on the "S". Grade? Excluding the next comment, I would guess 45. With some luck, it might get a 50. Would PCGS grade it? NO! It is corroded Could NCS help it? Sorry, but I am not familiar enough to answer this one, but from the noise I have picked up on, doubtful. BTW, those are some pretty good pictures.
I would say VF30 and PCGS Genuine simply because it looks like the corrosion has started to eat into the coin. Not sure what it will look if you get it off.
Best guess: - probably XF - verdigris - NCS could "conserve" it - NGC "DETAILS" coin OR PCGS "Genuine"
No Reason No reason you should have such a worn out infected corroded cent. PM me your address so I can send you an envelope to get it out of your sight before you go blind thinking about it. BTW~it seems you are doing quit well with you new camera. So get rid of that nasty '09 (I'll pay postage) and take a new photo of a nice new Pretty one.
This one has been in a Dansco for almost 20 years now. Never noticed the green but the last time I looked at it was about 10 years back. The coin is actually a glossy dark brown but everything I image that's copper comes off the camera a washed out tan color. I'll have to agree it looks cleaned. I learned a lot this weekend about imaging Lincolns. Next is learning how to edit an image. At this point, It's a problem coin. I may just give NCS a crack at it and put it back in the Dansco. That looks to be the best option because I won't work on a coin of this value. The cool thing is that I bought it raw and it looks to be real. I feel lucky. Thanks everyone.:thumb:
I am kinda wondering what is going on in the O of ONE. It appears to have 2 diagonal lines running downward to the right from 12K inside the O. Are they raised or just toning or hits? I would get it slabbed by a TGP that stands by their guarantee of authenticity. Just because the mintmark and position looks right does not mean its real. I would never buy a raw one. There are just to many really good counterfeits out there. Just my 2 cents.
"12K inside the O"? I assume you mean 12:00. Anyway, they look like die polish lines to me. "Just because the mintmark and position looks right does not mean its real." You are correct, but there is also the die chip by the top serif and inside the top loop. Those are not so easy to duplicate. And those are just the markers on the mint mark. Here are a few more indicators http://www.cointalk.com/t78043/
rlm, yes you are correct. K = o'clock as on a clock. In regards to the mintmark chip, let me refer you to Vol.2, Counterfeit Detection by ANA 1988 pp37. They discuss an extremely well made one in which they captured the chip and notch in mm along with die erosion and luster. Here are some of the tells - a couple of depressions on the rim above IN GOD WE TRUST - specficly above the I and E. Also a depression on L's coat. Has sharp squared off edges. Edge under magnification shows a criss cross pattern. Unfortunately, my old scanner is not compatible with Vista otherwise I would scan the article and post it. Don't forget, this one was made over 20 years ago. The scum are getting more and more better.
rlm, I just stumbled across this link - it's of the same as I was referring to above. http://www.money.org/AM/Template.cf...s&Template=/CM/HTMLDisplay.cfm&ContentID=7239
Yes, "Official Guide to Coin Grading and Counterfeit Detection" has some better pictures of the same coin in it. Funny thing is, they attribute it to a 1909-S cent. The point I was trying to make was that there was more to my answer than a mint mark. Not that it is impossible to get one past all the tests, but that it is not all that often. Just guessing, but my money would be on the side to there being more than one getting past the experts also.
"but my money would be on the side to there being more than one getting past the experts also." I feel the same way!
It only took me a year and that's normal for me PCGS has it and no work was done on the coin. I'm thinking rlm nailed it. Take a last shot at it. It's due any day now and I'll post the results.
