I found this blank in a roll. It is the same on both sides... nothing...
Do a lot of these make it out of the mint?

No, but a few do. I found one as well. I've seen them for sale at my coin club meeting for $2.

I don't understand? I didn't pay anything for this, it was in a roll from a box.

Those were included in the US Mint's "Educational" set.

actually, that is not a blank, but rather a planchet.

The difference is important. A planchet has had the rims upset and is ready to be coined, a blank does not have upset rims and must undergo several processes before it is ready for minting.

I tried to get more information on the "Educational" sets. How can it be determined if this is from one of these sets and not just an error from the mint? You were able to tell from the photo? I see that these sets were out in 2005, were their earlier ones?
    Thanks for any info...

Does opening an uncirculated roll (in my case 2009 LP3/4 pennies) decrease the value of the coins? I think it would cool to open it up hoping to find something interesting

In my previous life as a retail salesperson I found a dozen or so in rolls of coins. Cents and quarters seemed to be the most common ones I would find.
