The article mentions King Farouk of Egypt and reminds me that my maternal grandmother always used to say about someone who was haughty or self-entitled: "Who does he think he (or she) is? King Farouk?" It always made me smile when she said that and I think I will resuscitate my grandmother's expression.

Thanks for the link to the article! :-D

I laugh at anyone thinking New York City is GREAT. Big and BAD is more like it. But it has reached it's peak and will soon collapse into the rubble.

Holy moly! Don't worry, friend, it won't just be NY that's collapsing into the rubble, the rest of the country, then planet, will soon follow. BUT, what on earth did NY ever do to you to illicit such a visceral response? Were you mugged here? Did you start a business here and it fail? Did we insult you, somehow?
Just wanted you to know, I've been blessed to see this fantastic country, and your state was very kind and generous, to me. Wonderful people in Texas.
From rotten NY, to you in Texas, i wish you a fantastic Sunday. It ain't all bad, over here.

Wow dude. There is actually a lot of great stuff and places to see and enjoy here. There is crime in any city of the great US of A.
My congregation and I always pray for NYC. Have faith my friend.

I'm just hoping he's actually spent time here before judging so harshly. That's all.

I think the time we "reached our peak" was in the 70's and 80's when many areas were really drug infested and the number of abandoned buildings was horrendous :yack:.. And don't forget the stray dogs and abandoned cars.

Take a walk in the East Village/Lower East side and you won't find 1 abandoned building.. compared to that era.

    FYI,

I did visit NYC, sang in Carnegie Hall, didn't get mugged and spent $40 twice on WORLD RENOWNED NYC PIZZA that tastes like burned cardboard with ketchup on top.

Don't let the sign fool you.. There are much better places in NYC to eat great pizza!

I love New York.. I will never say anything bad about this place! (Except the sucky subway schedule)

I'm sorry your dining experience here wasn't stellar, as i had some of the best bbq I've ever had (except K.C.) in Texas. Sounds like singing at Carnegie Hall must have been a once in a lifetime experience! How amazing for you! I hope you'll come to visit again, and see some of the thousands of other places that NY has to offer, other than Manhattan.

My parents used to say "The greatest place on the planet is where you were born." New York New York is a playground in Las Vegas, Nevada. New York is a great state, now you know! Idaho is in there somewhere...

I love NY, but how's the garbage pickup situation?

I deal with garbage throughout the week. The Sanitation Department started pick-up last week.

I visited New York City about 10 years ago when my daughter was living in Queens. We did a lot of things while there and had a very enjoyable time particularly because we ignored my daughter's warning to not look anyone in the eye and never, ever speak to anyone on the street. I broke both those rules and had some nice chats with complete strangers. While we had many good to excellent meals, the best one was a takeout from a street cart in Queens, some kind of Middle Eastern dish. Snow was falling in the dark while we waited in line to order. After I paid and turned to leave, the person behind me in line called to me and handed me the change (about $5) which I had forgotten. Left a really nice glow. Whenever I go anywhere, I keep an open and inquisitive mind. I also maintain my situational awareness even at home.

That said, urban cores are not my kind of place despite the many amenities and attractions.

New York City is on my bucket list but I’m not in a giant hurry to get there. I’d rather take my younger years and use my vacation time to ski in the mountains while I still can.

I've been to NYC about a dozen times between the mid 80s and now. It's a fun place, but I'm always glad to leave. Too hectic, too grungy (especially in the 80s and when I was there in the spring), too crowded, too much traffic, some sketchy people, everything rushed. No problem with those who like it, but it's not for me

I actually liked Long Island and earlier Upstate New York. Outside the City proper, it seems OK.

Hey now! Thank you! There are lovely parts to this glorious state. It brightens my heart to hear it wasn't all bad. The city can be a bit much, i agree.
