I don‘t know about the 1939-O Bust, but on the 1838-O it‘s the variety ;-)

GR = Graham-Reiver (GR) Numbers

 

One of the Graham-Reiver Varieties of Reeded Edge half dollars 1836-1839. I saw a book for sale listing all of them with photos but it was too expensive for me at the time. NGC has a registry set of 55 of them if you want to take a look.

 

The tail end of the bust half series didn't make it into the Overton book...I believe the ones struck with the new steam press. Thus the GR numbering system.

 

That is because Overton stopped with the reeded edge

 

That's because that "modern crap" coined with steam didn't belong with "real" coins.

 

The Ancients Crowd say the same thing about the new-fangled screw press. "There hasn't been a real coin minted since they threw away the hammer!"
