The acoustic sounds, and storyline, behind Animals is merciless. Always been a favorite, and I love how that’s depicted in your coin storyboard.

It is YOUR collection so collect what appeals to you. Later on you can decide which way to want to go. Buy the best that you can afford and keep them protected.

Ancient-coin collectors seems to be close to unanimous in recommending "Collect what you like." I completely agree.

It may be that this CoinTalk forum is the best resource of all. It has a great search engine and almost any topic you might ask about has been addressed. For example, some of us love our books. If you decide you would like some books, you can search for recommendations. How might you store your coins? That has been addressed many times. What about coins of Athens? There have been many posts. Constantine? Many posts. You name it, and CoinTalk can help.

 

Yes but, in addition to all those opportunities for self help, feel free to post questions. We do give extra credit when it appears you first made an effort to help yourself but we are here for you. Do post any new coins you get including the ID as you have researched it (don't trust every seller to be correct and checking will do you good).

@TIF : Wow, that display of coins based on Pink Floyd's "Animals" is impressive. Now, if you can do "Ummagumma", including the song "Several Species of Small Furry Animals Gathered Together in a Cave and Grooving with a Pict", then I'll really be impressed

There's lots of good advice already in this thread. I'll just add that, in my experience, you have to let a specialty choose you rather than you setting out to choose it. At one point, early in my ancients collecting (c.1998) I decided I should specialize in coins of the Hephthalites/Huns and related. I soon got some decent examples of the main types, but my heart wasn't really into it, and I soon moved onto Parthians. Now, 20 years later, I've added a few more Hephthalite/etc. coins, but now they make sense as part of my broader collection of Sasanian and early Islamic, as examples from the borderlands that often imitated Sasanian designs. Just remember to read up on whatever you do decide to collect- these coins are so much more meaningful and interesting when you understand who issued them, what the designs and inscriptions mean, what was going on when they were in use, etc.
