Got this out of a shotgun foll I bought off of ebay for $8.00 there was also a 1909 vdb in it but I think this is a cooler find. I was wonder what the value for this coin is. I know that you cannot tell the grade on it from the pictures but it is vg or better minus the rims are damaged alot but it has full wheat lines and good facial fetures! So... About what do these coins go for?
The mint mark it may have have been punched on a die crack? but this may help 1946-S/D look like the 1st link http://www.coppercoins.com/lincoln/diestate.php?date=1946&die_id=1946s1om001&die_state=mds http://www.coppercoins.com/lincoln/diestate.php?date=1946&die_id=1946s1mm006&die_state=mds
looks like post mint damage. The photo seems to depict post mint damage above the 9 and below the 4. The damage appears like impact craters [where there is a depression with raise metal around the depression]. Others may have a different opinion of course.
Wow the images on that don't look like my S over D on mine the bottom of my S is in the middle of the D making it more obvious.
Wow um really? The D is the obvious one the S is what Im curious about I took it to a dealer today and he looked at it under a microscope and said that he wasn't sure if that was for sure an S or not but the D is certianly there.
The S is damage. Since an "S" is rather a free form shape, any damage that comes even close to it appears to the eye as being a "real" S. Yous will find these often on coins, but only when they are close to the MM area does it become questionable. See #4 on this url http://www.lincolncentresource.com/Controversial/Cents.html Jim
Yes but the 1946 actually had a S over D so I'm not to sure of it being just lucky that that looks like an S.
Yes, if yours was an actually S mintmark over the D, it would be remarkable! But when these are discovered, overlays are done of the photographs to be sure that the particular shape of that part of the mm shown is the exact same as the separate mintmark. So even though the OMM-1 of 1946 only shows a small portion of the underlying D, an overlay from the mintmark of a regular 46-D mm would line up exactly with that part. In your coin,an overlay of a 46-S mm would not line up exactly, thus no OMM. Overlays are made using photoshop or other editing progams, Hope this helps a little. Jim
I see what you mean. I will look at it under a microscope and try and take closer up photos but it just looks so much like an S but I guess it could just be close to an S.
Thanks what I am thinking now after looking at it but like I said I'm gonna take it up to the coin shop they have a really nice microscope up there.
Regardless if your cent ends up being an S over D or not, you paid for a very low cost vdb, and got the other 49 wheaties for free...sounds like you did pretty good :high5: -LTB
Thanks. I think that I did pretty good on that roll I have another roll comming in that I paid 5.00 for If I get one coin for my collect I will be just happy I still need 54 more! And I'm getting the 1909 S and the 1931 S soon
Well I took a picture with my new microscope and you all were right this is not an S over D it is a normal D with damage that appears to be an S witht the naked eye.
That's too bad that it wasn't an S over D, but you're right, proof is in the pic. And WOW BTW, I'm liking that scope. It's going to be a real eagle-eye for spotting any errors and documenting your findings with digital images. -LTB
