I've got a better date Buffalo nickel (1915-S). I'm in the process of replacing it because the one I have is damaged. It looks like an evil, demented automatic coin roller took its anger out on it. I see it as VF details but what would be a reasonable net grade? - F? - VG? - worse?
I don't know but I will take a guess and say XF-30. Actually I don't think any of the TPG's will grade it but at least you have one guess. Better date too, that's a shame!
The best I could hope for from PCGS would be "Genuine". Not sure what NGC would do with it. ANACS would give me a DETAILS grade.
NGC would give you a details grade. They all slab them like that now. Just guessing, but from what little I know, I think it would net grade at F12. If anyone has any rules (guides?) for net grade, I would like to hear them. I have never seen any nor heard of any except to fly by the seat of your pants.
Are you giving it VF details because of the full horn? Please consider the whole coin, instead of just parts of it that are commonly examined. The lettering on the obverse is worn into the rim. That gives it an AG-3 to G-4 grade. Yet, somehow, the date is full, and the horn is full. I am not a fan of net grading, but with the scratches, I would be amazed if the coin sold for more than G-4 money. I would advocate (without benefit of looking at my greysheet) paying half of G-4 money for it. This coin is best suited in a collection where it can be displayed obverse-up, with the reverse hidden forever.
OUCH, I do believe you could get VG-8 money out of the coin, despite the reverse damage. Yes, the obverse is worn, but it has a full date.
Without the damage, I'd give it a VF-25, but price wise you'd be looking at VG. However, most collectors (outside of the ebay community) would prefer a problem free VG. So, if you are looking for the highest return on this bison, I think you know where to pedal this coin!
