Hey all! no if anyone is wondering this is not one I found in that 5 gallon jug I purchased this one on my own because the bright red, high grade details and nice doubling I had to jump on it. This coin was what got me interested in hunting through pennies. There’s definitely a few scratches and dings that would probably put him at a low MS not sure about the grading for these. It does what looks to appear as a finger print on the reverse. I do want to get this one graded through NGC and from what I’ve read “online” a fingerprint can’t drop it from uncirculated if the coin is in MS condition but can drop it a few grades especially if it’s a gnarly one. I’m not going to dare to run it off for obvious reasons, I have lightly and very lightly patted it with a q-tip to see if anything budged and it did not. Any recommendations on what to do to get rid of it if possible? Or should I not even get it graded and keep him raw? Best regards, Travis
There isn't anything you can do really... I mean, acetone might take it off, but that's a might. And acetone might also get rid of luster. BUT, if you want to try that, then Vaseline, again, might restore the luster. I wouldn't try it.
I’ve only done the acetone on silver coins that makes me nervous. Any idea how a finger print could have done this I haven’t seen this on pennies before from what I recall
Ya, unfortunately that is the awful case. the oils and acids in the skin get transferred to the coins immediately. if caught right away, it can be removed it becomes permeant. (Like a red wine stain on a white shirt - once it sets in, its permanent.
Unfortunately those fingerprints are there to stay. Nice looking coin otherwise and my opinion would be to leave her raw.
Once a print always a print.. makes sense I had a Barber quarter that had a print from a long ways back and luckily it didn’t affect the grade when I sent it off. Made it look a bit Cooke IMO
Yea it’s not on the lower ends of the Lincoln’s but hey at least it’s not the 55 DDO! That’s next in my list but I should wait some time before that king
