Hi all! I just won my first lots from Roma Numismatics. This was actually the most amount of money I've ever spent at an auction but, as an antoninianus collector, you'll probably be able to guess why these lots appealed to me All these coins are quite nicely silvered, and are all (apart from one) antoninianii of Gallienus, Aurelian and Claudius II Lot 1: Lot 2: Lot 3: Lot 3 is probably the best one of the three, as it includes 4 "SPQR" issues of Claudius II, a left facing Claudius II, and a left facing Gallienus (GENIVS AVG). It also has this "VICTORIAE GOTHIC" antoninianus of Claudius II, which is in one of the best conditions I've seen for the issue Alas, I just missed out on this lot. It included an extremely rare antoninianus of Gallienus, with a spectacular VICTORIAE AVG reverse. I bid quite a lot, but it sold for £600 (which is far too much for me to spend to get a single coin for my collection). Hopefully another CoinTalk member got it Please share some coins you won at Roma, or anything else that you think might be relevant. Thanks!
That's some great-looking lots and hopefully provides some hours of fun. And for the last lot, that would be a nice Gallienus to own. I've only seen two since I started collecting about 12 years ago and they were easy $200+ at the time.
We saw the obverse only of that coin earlier and were told that the reverse was similar. Now we know why.
Great lots! One of these days I’d like to pick up a lot, but I was very happy at the last Roma. I picked up a Bohemond III, after we chatted about them here so much. I also won a very rare Eurydikeia, named for the daughter of Lysimachos. Easily the big win of the morning for me though was this Sabakes tet. It set a personal record for me on expenditure for a coin, but imho was worth it.
That is a great group of coins! My favorite is the bust of Claudius II, first group, second row, first coin.
I was also considering bidding on this lot, but for a completely different reason. I was interested in this early Ascalon coin: So, slim chance, but if indeed another CoinTalk member got this lot for the Gallienus, I will be very happy to purchase it. I got two other group lots on this sale, this one mainly for a nice barbaric Commodus from Gerasa, in the right top corner: And this one for a countermarked Pius from Philadelphia in the top row. The coin itself is not very rare and I already have a decent example, but the countermark is rare, Howgego noted only 3.
Ooooh, those look like a ton of fun! While those VICTORIAE GOTHIC coins are the popular ones for Claudius II… There’s a Claudius II VICTOR GERMAN coin in there that I don’t have and think is my favorite.
Nice fun lots there. A bit rich for my blood, but long as you feel like you got a value deal, then you've won, in my book.
Looks like fun lots. As people can see from my posts, I love groups lots as well. I didn't do Roma, saving some money for another auction.
That's a very nice and very rare owl of Sabakes, and a key acquisition. They come up very infrequently at auction or on coin sites. Congratulations! It has all of the reverse legend, which is very desirable. That is missing on my example, acquired back in the 90s. 16.65 grams Do you think the two coins have matching dies? The flan for your coin seems wider, which accounts for the greater detail. I did acquire a Pharaonic owl that is a die match for one I own. When it arrives I'll take a couple of photos of it.
Thanks, everyone! I'll have a lot of fun looking through the coins I didn't actually notice that one lol. I thought they were all the VICTORIAE GOTHIC types, so it's nice to have a different type . I don't actually have an example of either at the moment Thanks! It worked out at about £7.50 each, which I think isn't bad for coins like these
Those lots look like a lot of fun, @Harry G! A good foundation for a specialized collection, too. Here's my latest acquisition from Roma. Faustina the Younger, of course! Bought it for the stephane. Faustina II, AD 147-175. Roman Æ as or dupondius, 11.67 g, 26.1 mm, 12 h. Rome, AD 161- c. 164. Obv: FAVSTINA AVGVSTA, draped bust, right, and wearing stephane. Rev: SALVTI AVGVSTAE S C, Salus seated left, feeding snake coiled round altar from patera in right hand and resting left arm on chair. Refs: RIC 1671; BMCRE 995; Cohen 201; RCV 5303; MIR 30-7/10a, b diad. Notes: Ex Antonio Carmona Collection.
I just checked the latest Roma auction, and they have about 10 very similar lots to the ones I've just bought. I'd guess these coins are all from the same hoard. Maybe I'll grab a few more
They do look similar, though I have a lot to learn about matching dies. I’m ecstatic to have won this coin. I nearly had a meltdown when last week’s server issue prevented me from bidding. I was super nervous the whole week but amazingly won out.
