Evening People. I'm sitting here in the living room, playing on my daughters lap-top, watching PBS and logged onto our favorite site (CT). Just finished watching a documentary on "Yellowstone" Excellent documentary. Why am I watching PBS? No frigggin' college "hoops" on ESPN. Only winter games stuff or "Millrose" games (track). No college football (That's gone the way of the California Condor, at least for another six months). Which brings me to the point....what the heck is the "draw" about coin collecting? What the heck makes me feel so darned interested in something that so many people ('cept for you folks here) wouldn't even give an extra thought to? "Die Marriages", "struck throughs", "RPM's", "State Quarters", "classic commem's", "modern commems"....I can see their eyes glazin' over. Is there something wrong with me? Am I in need of serious counseling by a medical professional? What the heck is it that keeps me driven and motivated in this hobby. For the life of me I can't understand it. I should have become bored with coin collecting ages ago, and yet, I'm still interested, still passionate about the hobby. I'm surfing the TV channels, looking for any kind of "manly" sport worthy of my liking and yet, I'm still drawn to this site, aching for interaction with fellow collectors. Is there hope for me? Thoughts? Comments?
And here I was hoping for some motivational inspiration. Golf Channel. I just may go and slit my wrists....
You might have some trouble finding a real sport. After all, it's a few months until baseball season starts As for your other other questions, I'm not sure myself what keeps people coming back to this hobby. All I know is that every time I walk into a coin shop, I'm like a kid in a candy store. There always seems to be new things to discover if one looks hard enough, and it gives a little sense of wonder every once in a while. Maybe that's it?
I wish I could be more inspirational, but I'm trying to snipe eBay auctions with dial-up. This requires every ounce of concentration I can muster. :computer:
I think it is because the more you learn about coins the more one appreciates them as an object of art and history. Now Ken about that medical counseling, well..................
Ken, you're okay, no professional help necessary. Coin collecting is your sport of choice. It's kind of like... soccer: keep your hands off the round thing(s), football: strategies and brute force = achievement, baseball: when you really connect with the ball (coin) the whole team comes out to cheer you on home, basketball: you have to go through many hoops to score a winner, swimming: taking a dip is a timed event, horse racing: place your bids and prepare to whip the competition, running: a marathon is long and difficult to complete... just like some coin series, tennis: match point is like a fine line between a 69 and 70, cycling: you'll spin your wheels for a long time before you can make the grade, boxing: stamina is required to walk the entire bourse looking for deals, gymnastics: flips are common and a regular occurrence... good quality ones protect your scores.
You are hereby banned from CT until after you place your bids! No more missing out on intended auction activity, because we don't get to see your winners if you forget to bid and loose the coin.
Ken, Krispy just provided all the professional medical counseling one could need concerning coin collecting.
Chris, I do believe I'm feeling better.....yes indeed, I think you've made me see the light. It was Yakpoo and that evil mention of golf that set me back....
TRUE that! So then in regards to coin collecting as a sport: ping pong: the Chinese keep smacking their balls at you and you have to keep driving them back down their throats!
