I'm not sure I've ever seen any... anyone care to post one or two to show all what it takes to earn a star on a lincoln cent at NGC ?
I was curious of the same thing. Everytime The Penny Last posts pictures of her coins, I am curious as to why none of them have the star designation.
From what I have heard, one must pay extra to receive a star designation, but if a coin has exceptional eye appeal, it should be obvious, regardless of whether or not it has a star
I am reasonably sure that you do not pay for the star. If your submission deserves it, it get one. I personally have none, but Lehigh just posted an 1897 proof Indian that graded 66 RB* and here is one The penny lady has posted 1899 MS66 BN 66*.
Yeah,, I couldn't see how NGC could charge extra for the star.. that just didn't make sense to me at all. What if I didn't "earn" it,,, then your out the surcharge... I don't they anyone would ever pay for that, and the brashness of such an offer would probably keep me from even submitting anything to them, with or without the star surcharge..... Penny Lady has some beautiful coins,,, that 1899 obverse is how I had envisioned my 1913 under Todd's camera...
I have a 1960 LD PF67*(pictured),1971 PF67Cam*, and a 1972PF68Cam*...see mostly Lincoln Proofs with the Star...
If your submitting a raw coin (* or cross-over from another company) to NGC you do not pay for the star designation. NGC's Star Designation for graded coins You only pay if you are resubmitting a coin already graded (*by NGC) for a review.
Never heard of a star on a slab before. I wonder if any of the many, many slags I've cracked had one. Guess I'll never know. And if there was one, it still would have gotten cracked open.
Thank you and RLM for the clarification; I've seen other people here saying that it had to be paid for, so now I feel bad for spreading misinformation
No problem. I should clarify too, you only pay the $10 fee if you are resubmitting an NGC graded coin, for the review (for the star designation). Any other coin submitted (Raw, or cross-over from another company) there would be no extra fee besides grading costs.
You are not the only one. I thought I read somewhere that they charged $10 to see if a coin got the * designation and I did not know that was only for re-submitted coins.
