Sorry for so many posts recently. I got alot of things I wanted to share. ^_^ This is the 3rd denarius that I won at last night’s auction. I didn’t want to post all of them in one post since it makes thing complicated as I don’t know which coin people are referring to when they post replies. Anyway without any further ado: Caracalla! He looks young on this coin. At first when I saw it I thought it was his brother Geta. . Caracalla (AD 198-217). AR denarius (19mm, 3.28 gm, 5h). NGC Choice AU 5/5 - 4/5. Rome, AD 201-206. ANTONINVS-PIVS AVG, laureate, draped and cuirassed bust of Caracalla right, seen from behind / CONCORDIA-FELIX, Plautilla, on left, standing right, clasping right hands with Caracalla, on right, standing left, with scroll in left hand. RIC IV.I 124b. I think this coin is celebrating his marriage to Plautilla since Concordia (on the reverse) was the Goddess of marriage. I feel like this coin is saying to the Roman people “we have a happy marriage”. One thing I really like about this denarius is that it’s very well centered and has the full beads surrounding the portrait Feel free to share your Caracalla coinage (of any type) here!
How about the same issue in Plautilla’s name? Imperial Rome Plautilla, r. 202-205 A.D. (202 A.D.) Rome Mint, AR Denarius, 18.82 mm x 3.15 grams Obv.: PLAVTILLAE AVGVSTAE. Draped bust right, hair coiled in vertical ridges and fastened in bun on back Rev.: CONCORDIAE AETERNAE. Caracalla standing left, clasping hands with Plautilla standing right Ref.: SRCV 7069, RIC IV-1 Caracalla 361, p. 269
Thanks . I agree I love coins that have multiple historical figures on them. Kind of like my Faustina Jr. denarius with Commodus on it. Two birds with one denarius.
Yes, I am the current caretaker. I rarely have a chance to show off all of them together. I have one last one:
He was a cute kid and went straight downhill soon after this sestertius was made. In the middle years, he was rather ordinary looking. His peak in brutality actually came a couple years before the end. This as is from the last year. None of my AE coins are high grade but the one I really wish were better is the posthumous sestertius.
Seems the only two photos I have on my phone are provincials… so there’s a few fun ones from the backwoods. Alexandria Troas SNG Cop 134v Traianopolis Varbanov 2793 it looks like I also have this great snarling bust image of a denarius (click to blow it up)… but not a pic of the whole coin.
I don't think I could choose just one Caracalla, although this one is still my favorite portrait on any ancient I own, and I have yet to see another one which captures his wrathful character as well as the deeply furrowed brow and wrinkled nose of this one. I still like to entertain the notion that this may have been specially prepared as a presentation piece for the emperor himself or one of his inner circle. And the rest As Caesar As Augustus AE "As" of Pisidia An unofficial denarius combining a ca. 211 obverse with the reverse of his late wife Antoninianus A sestertius - I'm reasonably certain that this is genuine, but also that it has been significantly modified - certainly heavily smoothed and re-patinated A relatively scarce imperial As, an irrelevant denomination this late in the Imperial era And finally a tetradrachm from Tyre, showing the Murex shell from which could be extracted approximately one drop of the coveted Tyrian Purple dye
Great coins! Thanks for sharing I read somewhere that Tyrian Purple dye sold for 150,000 denarii per pound. Which also happened to be the price of a lion if you’re interested in one xD. That’s just crazy though. 150,000 denarii was soooo much money when you consider a legionary only made 1 denarius per day.
Most of my Caracalla coinage has been posted more than once, so I'll post some coins with less mileage .
Good ol' Caracalla. My first coin with Caracalla was bought when I wasn't an ancient coins collector. Thrace. Pautalia. Caracalla AD 211-217. AV K MA ANTΩNEI, Laureate, draped and cuirassed bust right / OVΛΠIAC ΠAVTAΛIAC, Omphalos entwined by serpent erect right, set on garlanded altar. Varbanov 4975 var. (legends) Then in my first auction with individual coins I got 2 provincials. On this one I really like the portrait, the engraver did quite a good job. Caracalla, AE18 of Trajanopolis, Thrace. AVT K M AVΡ ANTΩNINOC, laureate head right / TΡAIANOΠOΛEITΩN, flaming altar. Moushmov 5026; Varbanov 2767 var (bust type). Today I would probably pass this one but, at 10 EUR and with an animal depicted (one of my themes in the collection) it's not that bad. Troas. Alexandreia. Caracalla AD 198-217. Bronze Æ 25 mm., 7,16 g. M AVRE-L ANTONI, laureate, draped and cuirassed bust of Caracalla right / COL AVG // TROA, horse grazing right. Bellinger, Troy A283, A300-01 var. (legends). My only denarius from Caracalla as Augustus RIC IV Caracalla 227 (denarius) Obverse ANTONINVS PIVS AVG BRIT Type: Head of Caracalla, laureate, bearded, right Reverse PROVIDENTIAE DEORVM Type: Providentia, draped, standing left, holding wand in right hand over globe and sceptre in left hand 2 from times when he was very young. Caracalla (as Caesar, 196-198) AR denarius. Rome. Dated 196 M AVR ANTONINVS CAES - bareheaded and draped bust right Rev: SEVERI AVG PII FIL - Implements of the priesthood: Lituus, axe, jug, simpulum and sprinkler RIC IV Caracalla 4. 2,96 g, 18 mm My last one was incorrectly attributed as Geta. To be honest I would have preferred a Geta as I have no imperials from him, but this just means I have to be more careful when reading the auction house attributions. RIC IV Caracalla 13A (denarius) Caracalla as Caesar, AR Denarius, Rome mint, 197 AD Obv: M AVR ANTON CAES PONTIF, bust of Caracalla, bare-headed, draped, right Rev: PRINCIPI IVVENTVTIS, Caracalla, in military attire, standing left, holding baton in right hand and spear in left hand; to right, trophy 3.01 gr. 18 mm
Nice addition (despite the plastic tomb ) Both Caracalla and Plautilla with the Concordia Felix reverse : A Vitus reverse : A Venus reverse on an antoninianus : Q
