I am working on documenting the various types of KM460 Mexico Un Peso. I am unsure if I have all the types, particularly 1982 and 1983. http://normansherlock.wixsite.com/un-peso (edited by request) I'm also interested to know why there were two distinct types for many years. Thanks,
Interesting-didn't realize there were so many varieties in this series. I have gotten into the varieties of the Canadian Large cents. Will have to look through all my pesos now. Just got a hundred or so and was going to get rid of them cheap. Will have to go back through now. Any idea on the rarity of any of these varieties? Olmanjon
I don't think any of them are considered rare. The second variety listed of each year is generally the scarcer of the two types.
I have tried to find information about why there were two distinct types, when they apparently were made at the same mint (?). Does anyone know where I can find more information on the subject? Thanks.
@ NSS: I know this is earlier than your date range in the OP but I was wondering if your could help me with this inquiry, Mexican 1975 1 Peso, Type 8 - Date variety question. I also came across your site in my own search but had some trouble figuring out notations. Thanks in advance.
I wrote the guide referenced in the original post strictly from observing coins. Some lists have date varieties that I've never been able to locate (1982 and 1983). The "knot" and "bead" are my own observations. I had hoped this guide would help identify the different date types by alternative means (especially if you had only one example to view). Some dates have only one set of characteristics. Some dates have two. For example, in 1978, the closed 8 date variety has the "///" bead on the collar and does have a knot clearly visible where the bandanna is tied. This is the only combination of those characteristics I have observed. The open 8 date variety has the "\\\" bead and does not have a visible knot where the bandanna is tied. At the top of the page is an illustration that visually explains where to find the bead, knot, etc. The length of the bandanna also varies, but I did not record my observations on each date type. I have still not seen an explanation of why there are two distinct types for many of the dates in this series. They all have the OM mint mark.
Thank you. I appreciate the info on this. Indeed I only had one of that date coin to compare and your guide was the most helpful I had found.
You are welcome. I have never seen this information documented anywhere else. There are also differences in the sideburns, hair "comb" pattern, eyelids, and probably others.
In the 70s-80s there seems to have been an acceleration of design tweaks to the Peso at the Mint, I wonder what was going on at the time to warrant all these subtle changes with each new die or successive year's production. I know little of their Mint's structure, do they have multiple facilities as we do in the US (Phily, Denver, SF, West Point)?
Actually have 5 KM# 460s 1970 narrow date 1971 (2 of them) 1982 closed 8 1983 (not sure if it's a narrow or wide date)
One thing I noticed, from the pics on your website, is that after 1977 the bandana has 1 or 2 ends on it.
Oh snap! Thank you for creating that page NSS I've found it most useful! So is http://www.anythinganywhere.com/commerce/coins/coinpics/varieties.htm So do you have any insite in some of the other varieties? Like the 1995 New Peso has listed a variety but I'm striking out on finding images to help me figure it out.
