TPG for Details Coins... wondering what to do!

I always buy the coin and not the grade, but not everyone operates that way, so here is what I'm wondering...

Does it make sense to send a coin with details in for grading to a company that will still assign in a numerical grade?

I could send the coin to PCGS, but I'm sure it will come back as details-cleaned. Or, I could send the coin to ANACS and will will come back with a numerical grade and the details designation.

I prefer PCGS/NGC graded coins since they are tier-one graders. However, for a coin that I'm going to flip (likely on eBay) does it make more sense to send it to ANACS, which is still a reputable grader, but is often considered a tier-2 TPG.

The coin is an 1895-O Morgan, which I'm guessing will hit a 50 or 55, but looks cleaned. Higher grades of this coin really start to climb in price. I personally think that a numerical grade from ANACS will help me sell it easier since some people still buy the grade, not the coin. Thoughts?

    Yes.

    ANACS or ICG.

People are more and more fed up with PCGS and NGC. Wait times, cost, subscriptions, etc.

I see more and more dealers preferring ICG or ANACS each year. Unless you're playing the registry game, it's just not worth it.

Details coins, especially Morgans are good with ANACS because they will attribute pretty much any variety to exist.

You'll be leaving money on the table by not using PCGS or at least NGC. It would only make sense to use ANACS on a coin like that if you could get it straight graded there when it wouldnt straight grade at PCGS or NGC

In this case, I would go with ANACS.

You will get more money with PCGS or even NGC than ANACS. I don't know how it is for ANACS but as others have stated the PCGS/NGC turnarounds aren't very fast right now.

Considering this is a $500++ coin I'd go with PCGS.

The folks who 'by' the grade and not the coin are idiots. And they haven't a clue regarding correct grammar......... devil.gif

Where there is a significant price jump within a grade level, and the coin is on the high end, I think ANACS makes more sense. For example if an AU58 is 5x the market price of an AU50, then a grade of AU58 Details could significantly outperform a grade of AU Details, as you would get with PCGS. This is an exception to the rule.

ANACs without a doubt.. the numeric grade will outsell au details grade.. to be honest I generaly stick with pcgs and ngc but some of my favorite coins sit in ANACs slabs for that very reason :D
