As Ardatirion said "Its been pretty boring these past few weeks, at least for ancient coins. So I figured I'd post some of my new purchases." Read more: http://www.cointalk.com/t89118-2/#ixzz0dxNU5ovn So here my new purchase. Not pretty, but I've been looking for an inexspensive one for a while. Mark Antony, Triumvir and Imperator, 44 - 30 B.C., Silver denarius, cf. Crawford 544/14, Sydenham 1216, BMCRR 190, and RSC I 27 ff., Fair, Patrae?, 2.818g, 17.7mm, 180o, 32 - 31 B.C.; obverse ANT•AVG / III VIR•R•P•C, galley right with rowers, mast with banners at prow, border of dots; reverse LEG - [...], legionary eagle between two standards, border of dots
Nice pick up! I've been meaning to get one of these too, but I haven't gotten around to it yet. If you don't mind telling, where did you get it/how much did it set you back? stainless
it will put mine to shame but yes:high5: edit: and people will be able to see what they are supposed to look like
OK, then, I just put a link, so people will have the choice of seeing it...or not http://www.forumancientcoins.com/gallery/displayimage.php?pos=-34335 Q
another coin I'm willing to trade you for if you want It is a great one though I like the toning on it too. I think with a bit of concentration I'll be able to stare at mine and maybe find which legion it is (or imagine it if I spend to much time:goofer
Thanks for the kind words. It really depends on what you want to trade it for :high5: (might be a bit pricey though....)
Randy, I agree with you, legionary denarii have something special. I like them too. Here is one that I found last year (together with the 4 other coins). Not in good shape, worn pretty slick so that the legion cannot be identified. It probably circulated for about 120-140 years. But it is still special to me.
I meant my antony for yours :goofer: Not fully but the gallys pretty visalbe, and can see parts of the eagle and standards Its awsome the coins you find! The fact that they did circulate for a long time and where the came from facinates me. On another forum someone said, "With the Antony coin you at least know that a Roman Legionary held this coin just before the battle of Actium. "
Hmmm, interesting. Was this at forvm anciens? Imma do a bit a searching on this, and if I find it to be true, these are moving up on my list. stainless
yeah, I did a few searchs as well, some coralate with that, and that these were probably made with Cleopatras silver.
