so i was searching through a random mixed lot of coins i found and came across a Morgan dollar. i was excited, it was good quality, except for a little chip. i then proceeded to look it up in my 2008 red book. my jaw went like

its a 1904 San Francisco mint.

    95 in VF
    260 in EF
    660 in AU
    1200 in MS-60
    3600 in MS-63
    5200 in MS-64
    8500 in MS-50!
    this really made me excited!

I'm not sure what grade it is considering me being a novice at coin collecting.
can i have some help please?

physics-fan3.14 You got any more of them.... prooflikes?

No, you did not find what you think you found. That is a counterfeit, albeit a rather good one. Notice in your pictures the blister-like effect on the devices - that is a sure sign its a fake. Also, notice the soft, mushy details. The coloration is off as well. Furthermore, the whole "feel" of the coin is off - but this is something that is very hard to explain.

Notice the detail on the "s" mintmark appears very worn. The high points on the Morgan are the eagle's breast and the hair right above liberty's ear. It's odd for the mintmark to be so worn but the eagle's breast feathers to be intact. I agree that something is "off" here.

Well it is time to weigh it. Then size it. Then magnet check.

Yes. Weigh it. I am not convinced from those photos that it's a fake and would like to see bigger and better shots.

Glad to hear you didn't overspend. Guess the seller just tossed in a 'possible found treasure' that got your attention.

I was convinced immediately. After you look at a lot of them and almost memorize what they should look like, everything on this sticks out immediately.

The base of the wings aren't right. One side has a high peak in the field, the other barely a dent. The date is way wrong. Like big bubble numbers. On the closeup shots, the open areas inside the D and the O aren't even close to being right. And besides all this, the whole coin looks worn down, while everything else looks MS without a scratch on it. And there's probably more.

No question this is fake. Sorry.

Well the seller will probably call this a "novelty coin". I would stay away from those lots that show SGS holders or selfslabbers. Now was it 15 cents or 15 dollars? Big difference - but I still don't think you got hurt too bad. I would say 99% of these lot sales I see on ebay are not worth it. Being a novice as you mentioned please be careful on ebay - there are a lot of rip-offs. I personally believe if you are a novice buying on ebay then buy PCGS or NGC graded coins. Once you have experience and have looked at enough coins you can buy raw coins off ebay. I have been around here for 4-5 years and still consider myself a novice in a lot of areas. There are a lot of us on here and we can probably all recommend some good dealers. Take your time with this hobby.
