So who exactly is the babe featured on them? Is she equivalant to something like ours (United States) Liberty chick? stainless
I am not an expert here but believe the origins date back to the Romans. I think the armored goddess symbolizes both the strength and the beauty of Great Britain. Not sure if Miss Liberty is an exact equivalent for the U.S. but it does makes sense. TC
I am of the view that Miss Liberty is directly influenced by Britannia. She appears on post-independence halfpenny coins on the reverse in the style of britannia, but with a liberty cap mounted upon her trident. Britannia is supposed to be the personification of Britain (I'm not sure if she was actually considered a goddess by the Romans or merely symbol of one of their provinces). She is often seen with an Olive branch as well as a trident. Symbolising peace and war respectively. It is interesting to note that between 1821 and 1969, Britannia lost the olive branch and just had the trident and shield! (Maybe I'm looking too much into that?)
I agree. The United States has Miss Liberty, the British have Britannia, and the French have Marianne. I would rather look at a coin with a woman than a man with a beard. Maybe I'm weird...:goofer:
Britannia was really more of a personification than a real deity. Every province had one, and Roma was the only one to really be worshiped. Take a look at Hadrian's travel series for the other provinces.
I like the toning. Here is one of my 2010 FUN show purchases. I have wanted one for a while now. This one booth from the UK was selling them for just over spot. I selected the most beautiful one they had. Very best regards, collect89
