Opened another one of my boxes late yesterday evening and found this.

It’s a 1908 Gold Indian Quarter ($2.50) Eagle. This was the first year of issue of a new design. There is no raised edge and the design is incluse or below the coins surface.

The designer was Bela Lyon Pratt, a Boston sculptor. He was a student of Augustus Saint-Gaudens. Mr. Pratt designed several designs that were used on US coinage. There was a fear that this design would attract germs so it did not circulate well.

That fear was not based on facts and so the design was fairly short lived. This design is sought after by today’s collectors but it was rejected by coin collectors in its time.

21 years of production, .900 gold and just over 1/2 million struck. There is nothing not to like about this coin. Thanks for sharing

Just to keep the record straight, these coins were not minted from 1916 through 1924. There were only 13 years for the minting of them. 1925 was the Denver mint only and Denver also minted them in 2 other years. 564,821 of this date minted.

I can’t. About 2010 I saw the lower mintages and the prices. I felt it was an affordable price to get them all and that’s exactly what I did. Everywhere I went I looked and after 2 years I had them.

I bought lots of coins in the last 10 years but due to working 6 days a week and 80 plus hours each week I never opened them. I just tucked them away. Now that I’m retired I’m finding them and slowly getting to open them. Yes it’s fun and exciting.

A few of the boxes are boring but others are so exciting. I like those. :) Looking back, it’s amazing what I bought. In some cases I think I just bought junk silver based on what I’ve found. One day I’ll get through them all but I open one and a few days later I find 2 or 3 more.
Every box in this photo has not been opened and there’s more boxes elsewhere.
