Actually, they are very close and that is one of the most complex of all problems because the biological Intelligences are so unpredictable.
what? Ae you aware how BAD the human eye is? If I took your eye and put it in a camera you would get no images from it that you would consider usable.
Its the biologic versus mechanical. Computers can't out compete humans yet when it comes to sensing and reacting to the natural world. Sure in a lab yes. But whether you know it or not you brain is making so many calculations based on your eyes ears and even smells that a computer has to rely on a sensor to correctly interpret so many variables that come naturally to the human brain in a split second.
Put human vs computer to fishing. You a better fisherman than a computer? Can they cast a lure, detect a strike or set the hook and finesse a fish to the boat better that you? I don't think so. Edit: Much less read the water and know where to cast for some species. And that is not even fly fishing.
Oh, no, no. The sensors are already far better than human senses. Humans don't have radar or LIDAR. Humans don't have 360-degree vision. Humans can't monitor and adjust traction to four individual tires a hundred times a second. We still have most affordable cameras beat for dynamic range (coping with glare and shadow), but even there, the advantage isn't going to last long. For resolution and frame rate, cameras are way ahead. The struggle for AI is integrating and interpreting all that information. AI isn't yet better than humans at all aspects of driving. But I expect it will be, and soon. There's lots of motivation to make it happen, in the form of money, safety, and quality of life. I don't believe that only the human brain is capable of driving. In fact, I think putting humans in direct control of vehicles is a terrible idea. I look forward to having an alternative.
