Satootoko - Don't look now but New Jersey is thinking about putting the NJ Turnpike up for sale to fix the state budget problem. Bridges are small time items now. But you are absolutely correct about what is saved vs. what will be worth having saved. I suppose anything with a mintage under 100,000 in good condition will eventually be worth saving, if there is such a thing.

The post was "let's play a guessing game for the 2005 coins"......not whether i should be a "collector" or an "investor".

thanks, charlie, for the welcome and the stats. good to know in numismatics i reckon. Do you guys know what the full split bands on the eisenhower dimes for a 2005 would be worth?

I hope you mean Roosevelt....if so right now I don't think it would be worth much...give it a few years and maybe...

no, i think i've found a FSB 2005 dime in random change i got from buying a sundrop at school. i showed it to my math teacher who has collected for forever, and he believes it is. so, is there any value to be attained by having it graded? i'll try to get a picture soon.

FSB dimes are rarer but you have to have a few things before you can get the value...#1...a buyer....#2 a value for that coin....and since it is a 2005 and just minted this year I say there are more than just a few around right now so at time time...not much value....but maybe down the road it will be worth more...

The MINT SETS will be the keepers of 2005. First year for a full set of SATIN coins and, like it or not, there will never be another "first" year for the satins.

True, but first year doesn't usually translate into higher prices since everyone saves them since they are the first year. If you look at the coins of the last 100 years, the first year frequently isn't a major winner.

The high grade satin nickels are already commanding very high premiums and that WILL NOT end any time soon.

I hope not as I've got boxes of them slabbed MS68 & MS69 that I'm still trying to sell. ;)

Who knows which single satin coin will win out in the long term but I have a feeling one of those coins in those satin mint sets will eventually shock us all so we will have to give it some time and see what happens.

I've searched thru MANY of these sets and submitted well over a thousand to be graded. The Ocean View nickel is the most difficult coin in the set to find nice. However, they can be found.

    the best 2005 set

2005 westward journey six pieces nickels set ($12.95) against 2005 mint uncirculated set($16.95). which one is better?.

mintage as of numismatic news last report:

westward journey 106,737 est. 200,000 set after clsoing
mint unc. set 1,057,579 est. 1,400,000 set after closing

the uncirculated set mintage is quite high as compared to its prior years. and not every coin look satin finished in a set. maybe only a single satin finished coin in a set will command a high return. other than that. i don't see any good return on 2005 mint uncirculated set.

are the state quarters that you buy in the commemorative box proof or business strikes?

Not sure I understand the question - you can buy business strikes or Proofs in sets.

are they proofs or business coins?

Business strikes. I didn't realize you were asking about privately issued sets.

ah. what value is to be gained from popping the coins out and getting it graded? they are extremely nice coins.

There likely is no value to be gained by having the coins graded. In the best case they are ordinary coins from rolls obtained by the bank. In the worst case, they may even be circulated coins. But in no case are they anything but ordinary coins.

This is just another way for the bank in question to make money. They take ordinary coins worth $1.25 total, place them into a cardboard holder that they have had manufactured, probably for a dollar or less, with some fancy name on it and sell them to their customers for $??.00.

They have a better racket going than the home shopping TV shows.
